I managed to get the game running on new windows (using the fan patch) and got some more ideas for a Hardwar type game.
Perhaps going for an untextured look would make asset production easier. Objects could be coloured as flat polygons, with some subdivision to help making patterns and such. This wouldn't help to push the dystopian feel though (unless there's a grime & dust overlay effect, which could be pretty cheap, labour-wise).
For the Moth/ships I use a sort of consistent language, with a nacelle turtle type shell/cover, and the same cockpit for all (serves as an escape pod, and the interior view could be justifiably similar).
Signs, colour and little sub-models could be used to differentiate buildings. I used Chinese for the signs here but maybe Korean would be more interesting. I like the look of those characters and they fit with the DR style. Perhaps in the future some Mega-Samsung collapsed and left the colony behind.
A big theme of the game is people trying to flee the moon, but they're trapped squabbling... so a prop could be used to illustrate that... perhaps a larger crashed ship which has been scavenged, symbolizing how instead of repairing it, they instead dismantled their hope.
