Danny, your podcast helped pass time travelling across Sydney between clients. Thanks! Loved the JYP song at the end and the brief explanation on his musical influences. I think Running Man samples this song quite a bit. JYP is truly gifted with a wonderful musicality and sense of melody. You can almost pick a JYP composed song from listening to it like you can with Motown songs. Not sure where JYP the company would be without JYP the man.

I think in the end Americans/ Westerners put their immediate and individual happiness (which can be things like love life or career choice) above all else hence white people having the highest divorce rates. While Korean/Easterners think more of their happiness (usually equated to economic stability and status) in the long run and how it affects those around them like friends and family. Basically, Westerners live in the moment (YOLO lifestyle) and Easterners live for the future( for greater long term goals). Of course I am generalizing and not everyone fits into the mold so please don't be offended by my words

For the BTS/EXO thing, BigHit is debuting a new group that can be a success and EXO have to enlist at least one member to the military this year and we don't really know how SM will deal with them until they are all back (if they are still promoting as a group or only solo or subunits), which may leave BTS as the only group in their level still really active. Do you think this may change the scenario for this year's shows? Or do you thing the TV companies will just stick other groups as headliners?

There are many other professions that contractually or as an unwritten rule have limitations on your private life - for example nurses in Korea that work in large hospitals have an order in which they will have babies... and if they get pregnant when it's not their turn they get ostracized. It's insane I know. Obviously this kind of stuff is very frowned upon in the public eye - but sometimes the people inside feel a need for such rules to do their job - and whether they like it or not it just continues.

Like you, I learned the hard way how important it is to check things like water pressure before moving in somewhere. Good luck finding a new place to live! I hope it goes well for you. :]

I guess I kinda missed the mark on the main focus of your comment haha. To go over that part of the sense of obligation - this is very true. Parents will take care of their kids until(or sometimes even after) they marry and feel a sense of ownership while the kids feel in debt to their parents. There's a similar thing in the professional field, especially in fields like art or sports where it's a really small pool of people and everyone knows everyone.

They probably knew, but it's probably a PR choice to pretend they didn't. I mean their managers are on them 24/7 so they gotta know right? Plus, if YG admits that they knew all along Jennie was dating, some sensitive fans will probably pissed lol

DKDKTV

Yeah I don't think we will be doing the knetz reaction video. It's not something that would be fitting for our channel - tbh it seems worse than reactions cause it's really low hanging fruit,

As for your comments about “you can’t have everything,” I agree. But I think Americans at least believe that we have a right to a personal life. We believe that we have a right to personal freedom and privacy. So while we may have to give up dating or a personal life in order to succeed in a particular career, that would be a self selected and not under the terms of any corporate contract. It’s the contractual aspect of one’s job and a personal life which feels so foreign to Americans, I think. But I agree with the reality that an artist coming into the current Korean idol industry will have to decide whether it is worth it to them to play by the rules set down by the entertainment company. With Kpop’s growing Western fandom, I wonder how or if that will change the industry. Most Kpop fans I know don’t think of BTS as their boyfriends, so it’s not fulfilling that same “dating fantasy” that you mentioned. You’re so interesting and you have a great radio voice! : ) Thanks again....

Thanks for the shout-out, Danny. I’m honored that you took my thoughts into consideration. : ) Of course, I’d love to talk all this through over a beer, but in short, I agree with your comments about the collective nature of Korean society - particularly your emphasis on being a team player and not standing out as a distraction to the work of your team. It was a helpful insight since my thoughts about “obligation” were more concerned with expectations between elders and juniors. For example, in Korea, if parents invest a lot of money and time into their children’s success then there is an expectation that the children should follow the parents’ directions well past when a Western young person would. I think you and David mentioned that the expectation extends until you have your own kids, right? So the collective nature of Korean society vs the individual emphasis in Western society seems to be at play in lots of ways?

Jisoo and BLACKPINK have mentioned on JYP Party People and on other shows that they are allowed to pursue any of these clauses in their contract under permission of YG. The only issue that YG would have with their artists is if the members infringed on any of these clauses without YG ever knowing. Yes, YG has publicly said that they were unaware of the dating news, but the pictures taken by Dispatch are way too obvious. Kai even drove to YG headquarters to pick Jennie up and EXO's manager followed the BLACKPINK members and their manager. It really feels like YG was already informed that Jennie and Kai were dating.

Hey Danny. Enjoyed the listen. I'm born Aussie but fluent Korean so I understand both sides of the whole dating ban thing. There is so much deep rooted cultural context behind it I can see why non-Koreans as outsiders find it difficult to understand. This type of explanation and context is what you're good at. I'm personally not a fan of the knetz reaction video below cos it seems shallow for a sticky topic. Agree with the sentiment of some of the other comments that it could dilute the quality of your channel
