(Early Access) The worst day in Korean music history.

This event basically killed off an entire generation of musicians.

This is crazy, even American bands wouldn't have tried a stunt like that.

Yeah, but the real question is what type and color nail polish are you wearing on your pinky, tho?

What an insane story! It’s unfortunate that it has had such a lasting impact. While indie/alternative music is pretty broadly accepted in the U.S., I feel like there’s a similar negative public opinion here of more “extreme” genres like hardcore and metal. Anyway, the video was super interesting and definitely provided a lot of context about the Korean music scene.

Part of it could be xenophobia, but I also think a part of it is due to the fact that we are such a homogeneous, conservative society. Since we aren't multicultural, we have a very clear idea of what is 'Korean', or at least what isn't Korean. So anything that doesn't fit the typical Korean mold - be it good or bad, we see it as something foreign. On top of that we have stereotypes that western people are more open towards sexual acts, probably due to the influence of Hollywood movies. Thus anything that is sexually explicit in nature is often thought to be western.

I have seen this a few times, as I say in the clips you used: if a Korean does something far from the social norms you’ll find someone saying ‘It must be a foreigner’ something to that effect (in Japan they also do it with Japanese, I’ve seen people saying Burakumin are of foreign heritage). Is that a figure of speech lost in translation or is there really the perception that foreigners are second rate or barbarians to some Koreans? If you would say something here you would straight up imply that Dutch are civilized and everyone else degenerate. Some people do say it and they always mean non-white immigrants (even second-generation and further are considered foreigners by them). No one would say it about someone who is clearly Dutch. So to hear a Korean say it about another Korean to me gives it another implication than discrimination towards immigrants or those descending from them.

Danny, I appreciate you trying to make us feel as immersed in the story as you were! Now joke aside, this makes sense now why indie bands are not often seen in the media! Thanks for that great and honest ;-) review of what happened.

That was wild and kinda sad, I always wondered why there were so few indie bands on music shows and... I could see something like that "ban" happening in any other country if something like that happened on live TV (but I laughed so much with Danny using that bear thing on his head and talking about flailing dicks like it is the most natural thing in the world)

Very interesting content.

Nice! This puts some stuff in perspective -- thank you! Put your damn bathrobe on.

Love these type of videos (:

I really enjoyed this video! That's crazy that they did that. && it sucks that it gave that image to indie music.

I really liked this type of content about Korean culture and history
