Sexual / physical abuse in Korean sports & smoking bans in Korea

Danny, I truly hope you can quit smoking permanently. A relative of mine has tried so many times to quit smoking - tried nicotine patches, e-cigarettes, going cold turkey - but cannot quit. Australia seems to have similar laws to Korea except you can smoke on the street. Also, cigarettes must be plainly packaged, and they cost A$25-A$30 a packet due in part to high taxes. Given the understood connection between smoking and health conditions such as cancer, I think it is fair to levy such taxes to cover public health costs and to deter teenagers and others from smoking. I think banning smoking on the streets is a bit extreme - where are smokers supposed to smoke then? At home? Smoking decreases your appetite and can thus assist with weight control, so that could be one reason why many of your female friends are smoking.

Yeah I usually dislike autotune, but I don't know. She has some addictive qualities to her music.

it is the best part of being a patron indeed :)

Desperation moves / reactions are very common in the Korean government / companies. Koreans themselves are very quick to jump on a bandwagon, so when shit hits the fan... everyone flails and the result is cancelling or censoring stuff. I think if we had more patience in us then these kind of reactions would be less frequent lol.

Funny enough the warnings on our packaging are pretty toned down. The pictures are mild compared to what other countries put on their cigarette packs.

i love that you got distracted by what is going on outside. that would totally happen to me. it was still an interesting podcast. i like d the song at the end but i'm confused. you like the autotuning?? hahaha

Wooow...thanks for sharing your thoughts on the issue of sexual abuse as seen in sports and how it connects to cultural practices at large. That was really interesting! Also on the topic of smoking and other behaviour that also affects people not necessarily involved...I find not just in the case of Korea, many agencies with power when asked for accountability, have a terrible way of going about dealing with “solving” the problem. Cancelling it, censoring it out or suppressing it doesn’t really do anything at all because the focus is very far from the roots of the problem. And that’s unfortunate :/. Thanks for another insightful podcast! ^^

Nice podcast - it's just interesting to hear general social stuff going on where you are. There's a lot of anti-smoking stuff here in the UK as well (smoking bans, increased taxes, health warnings on packaging, advertising restrictions etc) but not smoking paparazzi... yet...
