KCON Recap, Crazy Rich Asians and Toy Story 4

Comments

I know I'm listening to this way late, but anyways, I also watched "Crazy Rich Asians" on the plane to New Zealand for my honeymoon in November. I thought it was a pretty basic Hollywood plot underneath and so was predictable but it seemed like a fun film...nothing serious.

If all the reactors get together with a proper proposal I'm sure LA can make that. In the long run if benefits them.

Bklyngirl913

Yeah there was a lot of space left unused - we could’ve had a fun meet and greet there. I’m thinking of maybe proposing that to KCON LA :)

DKDKTV

I guess it’s better than nothing, and we can’t expect to have a masterpiece from the get go.

DKDKTV

I feel like with Youtube espeicially, everyone’s really tiredI(especially the bigger Youtubers) of people trying to constantly take advantage of them. If I am at a similar level as they are, I think I feel it’s cool to offer a collab, but if they are some leagues ahead - like Big Marvel - regardless of my intentions, anything suggesting a collab can feel very leechy haha. Anyway, thanks again for the great job and company you offered during the three days of KCON! We’ll see you again :)

DKDKTV

Yeah this is what we have for now, but seriously we need better shit cause this way too shallow

DKDKTV

That’s true - even the rich in Koreans don’t act like that... or do they. Well what do I know about rich people’s lives in Asia tbh

DKDKTV

glad you enjoyed our panel. I found it enjoyable for sure as well.

DKDKTV

I’m the balled guy now? Lol

The same things you brought up is the same conversation that my friends had. I was a newbie and my friends have been prior years, They said that it was lack luster from previous years, even though it was a larger venue. Also from what I was told there were a few vendors that had issues with the Javits. I expected more in terms of Korean entertainment companies or Korean companies in general. A missed opportunity. I felt you guys and a number of You Tube reactors that were there (PD, J.R.E., TerryTV, Dezzy, etc) could have easily been given a space to have scheduled Meet & Greets. I saw PD and Dezzy get mobbed as well, but very gracious. So proud of you guys for the CNBC interview. Keep rising! Also, we New Yorkers welcome you whenever you're ready to come back. David too.

Hey Danny, so glad you and David are achieving your goal to be the authoritative voice on kpop. On Crazy Rich Asians: yes you have been spoilt with having grown up with Korean pop culture. Growing up with a Korean/Asian face with white parents in a predominantly white culture, there wasn't much in the way of people representing me in pop culture. If it wasn't for the hallyu wave I'm not sure if I would have much of a sense of what is to be Korean beyond Korean friends and the Australian Korean communities. Basically I'm starting with a low bar in terms of Asian representation in pop culture, and I had very low expectations after watching Fresh off the Boat. Crazy Rich Asians is a 3 star movie- I'll take that, especially after recently watching the Big Short. Fantastic movie but all of the Asian characters are portrayed as dumb, unethical or invisible.

In my opinion networking is important and sometimes relationships start off as business relationships and then turn in to friendships, so I see it as OK to approach someone and say "lets collab" and such. However, I also see where you are coming from in a sense of paranoia and worried that they will not see you as wanting to be an actual friend vs business exclusive relationship. While I was with you guys I met a ton of people and while talking with one person and when I mentioned "I've never seen, heard of or watched your channel before" they actually said to me "That's wonderful say it again." So, I can see how you may be worried about others intentions and worried that others may be worried about your intentions. Personally, You and David are great guys. I had a ton of fun at KCON thanks to you guys (I couldn't have gone without you guys and it's something I'll never forget <3). You are genuinely two of the nicest Youtubers in the world, so if you approach someone asking for a collab I think once they meet you they will understand you are trying to make genuine friends as well as create great content. Hope that all made sense!

I have to agree with you on your assessment of Crazy Rich Asians. I didn't see the movie, but I attempted to read the book. It was so shallow and poorly written I couldn't finish it. Seriously, how many descriptions of designer accessories are really necessary?!?! I'm glad to see more Asian representation in Hollywood, but can it please be higher quality content?

Danny I also didn’t like the movie. I can’t speak of creativity bec I sometimes enjoy cheap shallow flicks. It’s the theme. As an Asian I didn’t feel correctly represented by it. The title misleads non-Asians into thinking we’re like the ones in the movie. Should’ve been titled Crazy Rich Chinese. Nope, China (and its subs) is not the entirety of Asia. And the tag crazy rich is true for like 10% or less of the continent

Super Asel

Great podcast Danny! Was at KCon also first time and agree with your observations. Enjoyed the panel you guys did on journalism. Congrats on interview with CNBC. Can’t wait to see it. :)
