YO SAME I wish I got actual notifications rather than just email notifications.

Ugh I missed the livestream because of these damn Patreon e-mail notifications. Youtube just lets you know when a stream is up so much better.

Okay I understand why they were upset with him he could have spoke about the incident without showing their faces. He also could have educated them discreetly. I think he should have. Koreans don't understand what blackface is to African Americans. White people would not let black people appear in movies but they would paint themselves with black paint and play black people themselves but they would do it in a negative way to mock us and present us as uneducated when they are the one's who made it illegal for us to be educated we could be killed for trying to get educated. Many people watched those movies but of course people in other Countries don't know that them doing this was to mock and belittle black people. So when other's do it they are doing it not with same intentions but it hurts African Americans because we have endured these treatments for so long. And even when black people were finally allowed to be in movies they had to be dumb and uneducated. I think Sam let his emotions get the best of him it makes us very angry. I am glad he apologized not for the blackface but how he went about the situation I agree he was wrong in that because he was angry but they didn't know why he was angry. And even many people in Africa don't know about blackface because blackface started in America.

I am so upset I missed the live talk but I will still leave a Comment.

Thanks for the added context on ignorance and educate’s connotation in Korean. They definitely are not offensive or overly condescending in English. Could Sam have known this as a bilingual speaker and changed the wording in English and Korean to be more sensitive to the different audiences/languages? Could you give us a general idea of what his Korean message was so that we can compare their differences? Word for word translation is never good enough when trying to engage with important issues in multiple languages and cultures.

Also, are the majority of the critics of the red dress men?

Regarding Sam Okyere's callout - I agree with Danny and David, and I believe that bringing up the topic of blackface can be worded more carefully to Koreans. But I want to make a distinction - the examples of cosplay/costuming brought up where other graduates dressed up as characters from TV shows/media aren't the same as putting on makeup to look like someone from a different race. This is a topic prevalent in the cosplay community - where Black cosplayers are often criticized for portraying characters of different races (especially anime characters), so while criticism of Sam for the tone of his statement might be fair, the topic and a lack of awareness around it is just as triggering and emotional for Black people as the tone of the statement may have been for his audience. It's an understandable example, I just think context is important. (Not cancelling anyone here)

Wow. I work during a live and the whole internet blows up. I’ll be cramming before the chat. I am concerned about the flooding in the news.

Can't wait for the discussion tomorrow.

Awww Ryu Ho-jeong... My mother-in-law & sister-in-law were talking about this (discussing lol) My SIL was incredulous that this is such big "news", while my MIL also thought the news focus on this was excessive & pointless she was also ADAMANT that Ryu Ho-jeong dress was entirely inappropriate hence "the discussion" my MIL is a conservative/traditional 73 year old Korean women, my SIL is in her 40's arriving in the US in her teen years. I just attribute it the generation gap. However, I was surprised more about the short length than the color. Honestly in the US it's common to see women dress tacky anywhere (gross) that dress wasn't tacky but I also agree it isn't assembly appropriate & most women in politics even in the US will dress buisness casual not "summer fresh" I have less problem with those things and more issue with her adversaries making nasty, sexiest, perverted comments about a "dress" those comments are way more inappropriate & ludicrous than her choice to wear a red dress..

About Sam O. - From what I have seen of his videos in the past, he really seems to love South Korea a lot. That being said, his nationality is Ghanaian and so it’s understandable that he would feel something when he feels that his culture/background is being put out there in a negative way. He could have addressed it differently for sure, but I think the people calling to deport him are a little over the top too. In a country as homogenous as South Korea It’s understanding that things that affect another culture like this incident are difficult to understand why they would be upset or offended. Would it be so big if it wasn’t an African guy seemingly against an entire country? How did it get this far? I’m sure he just wanted to express himself as an individual but maybe he forgot that he actually has a platform. I doubt he meant to harm anyone through his words but his offense has caused offense to an entire group of people also. I think everyone is wrong here. Black face is wrong, attacking people (especially minors) is wrong, I think the real question is how to reconcile and is it possible for him to continue to do what he does amicably with Koreans who disagree with him and he with them?
