Itae*on Class ep13-14 watching party + ANNOUNCEMENT

Hey guys, so I tried out recording myself watching the recent eps of I*aewon class and I have to tell you something. After watching and recording this from Netflix, I realized, as a content creator what I am doing right now isn't morally right (especially because I'm a content creator, I should respect copyright even more). The initial thought was, to try to add value and promote k-content by watching it together, but I realized in the process that I was adding very little value by simply watching it with you guys and could do a better job in rather making a seperate video about the series. Plus, I realized that there was no effect of promoting in a closed community such as our Patreon. These two factors which were the justification of copyright infringement(including the thought: 'people who are in our patreon already watch it with paid services anyways') became meaningless.

Thus I concluded to do the right thing and not do kdrama reactions/watching parties. Even if they are accessible for free on streaming sites like kissasia and all, I feel like its different from reacting to completely publicly open videos on YouTube. I am really sorry for the constant changes in perks and my words. I should've thought deeper about it from the start.

Anyways, for this time ONLY I will upload the content I have recorded

So what will I do?

1. The simplest solution is going back to exclusive kpop reactions which I will do, since it was planned bi-weekly anyways.

2. I will do watching parties time to time for old k-movies, that are way to old enough to be promoted, or that I think is significant for you guys to watch. Now I know this falls in the same category of copyright infringement, but since this  a closed community and these movies aren't possibly going to be promoted further I think it might be ok. I've attended cinema classes where professors give us google drive links to old cinema movies or watch it with us together in class and discuss about it mid class. So I guess it's just an online version of that.

3. If you request a popular kdrama that is hot these days, I will create content related to it explaining some cultural backgrounds that appear in the drama. For example, while watching Itaewon Class this time, I noticed there was a lot to explain about the economy in Itaewon(Seoul in general), the small businesses forming alleys to survive with gentrification and moreover, Korean chaebul corporate culture. I will make a video about Itaewon Class within next week and release it soon :) I hope this will make up for it, for those of you have anticipated the kdrama content!

Thanks,

David

Ok I know super late. But what about a weekly chat room. Like y’all need to watch by Friday at 8pm KST cuz we’re gonna discuss the episode and your gonna have to hear about it. So might as well just watch. Like a live chat. Maybe not every week. You have a life. But 100% anyone in US has no life right now. Just saying

Cathy

Hey David! what about adding a netflix party extension on chrome and watching itewon class together with ducks?

ERRI didn’t finish.. ok so I get to judge every year SAGAwards. I know not to share them more so for all of the unions who helped produce the films but I do get what you’re saying. You really do focus on your own material and are true artists in a tough market. I guess if you were heading to the moon I would probably follow. Thanx for the honesty.

Double on the echo. It’s great when your heart takes over. Every year I get a ton of videos to judge in the SAGAFTRA

I echo what everyone else has already said. It's best to follow your moral compass, adjust accordingly, and be transparent. I appreciate your integrity.

completely understandable. trying to improve your content while keeping your integrity as a creator is important. who wouldn't want to watch a drama with you to see your reaction but it is just not possible, no biggie. your solution I actually find more engaging. sometimes the solution to the problem is better than the original concept. thanks for the honesty though. will totally be interested in those videos.

Cathy

From my perspective, your measured thoughts and experience are more interesting and valuable than your immediate reactions. (And also are potentially interesting and valuable even to people who haven't watched the dramas you're talking about — i.e., me again. 😁) Also, thanks for sharing your thinking on this. Ever since I first encountered DKDK I have valued your transparency (almost) as much as your content.

David - very proud of you. Thanks for thinking through this and not being afraid to change direction when you think something is wrong. Some DKDK fans may be disappointed, but your conscience is more important than our pleasure. Hang in there - you’re doing great!

As long as you are following your moral compass no one can fault you 👍🏻
