KPOP HISTORY IN 20 MINS. (From Seo Taiji to BTS)

Here it is. 90 percent finished. Excuse the blank spots. I'll fill it in soon :)

Also as you know how sensitive kpop fandoms are, plz give me any comments or feedback after watching the vid. What might have made it better, or what you think it seems to lack or over explain etc. Anything is good.

KPOP HISTORY IN 20 MINS. (From Seo Taiji to BTS)

Now, I could be off base here, but I don't think the idea of "black music" is actually the issue. I'm not black, but I get the feeling that its just that "black music" is kind of confusing. Like, music that only black people listen to? Or only black people make? Maybe phrasing it differently, like "music originated in black culture" or something along those lines might help? If I could get some assistance on that it would be appreciated. Because the idea itself is not wrong, those genres are rooted in black culture (same with the blues, jazz, also along with rock & roll but a lot of people forget that too).

That last article looked really interesting, but I don’t know anywhere near enough Korean to make out more than a few words. I still believe the term is not a good choice for an international audience as I do feel it promotes stereotypes, but I see now why you chose it. So many of our musical genres are rooted in the black community, recognize and respect. Thanks for listening and taking all of the feedback here seriously.

I definitely can see this as a series than just one video. There is a ton of potential in breaking this down even further into more videos explaining the different gens and other aspects and stuff too, if you find the time. Great work I really enjoyed it, it is obvious a lot of hard work and time and effort went into making this! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I hope you're removing the "insert whatever..." 🤣 but I think Mamamoo shouldn't be just named with the other bunch of newbie girl groups. Their vocals are out of this world and they have shown that you can look different like Hwasa and still be hot, they should be grouped with RV, BP, and Twice. I think SJ, Shinee, and Infinite definitely paved the road for the global market before BTS walked it. And I think a small mention of coed groups like Kard would've been nice. I wouldn't mind a little longer video, I feel like I needed 3 coffees before this so I could keep up 😅

While i was researching for the vid all the korean sources referred to early R&B, soul, gospel and hiphop as ‘black music’ which is why i used the term but i think its a wrongly used term in Korea after seeing all of your feedback. Wikipedia.. Naver encyclopedia. Blogs. All used the term Black Music. Sorry if i offended anybody. Here are the links I referred to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_music https://m.terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=5682523&cid=62892&categoryId=62892 https://ko.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/블랙_뮤직 https://seimo.tistory.com/m/277

I find the “black music” comment confusing at best and offensive at worst. What the heck did you mean by “black music”? Stereotypes are never good, not in kpop, not anywhere. Other than that, the pace was a bit fast but I’m okay with that. Awesome content (I may be channeling a spam bot—wanna be youtube friends?). Thanks for the preview and chance to critique. Can’t wait to see the final video.

i loved it! i’m used to these kinds of fast paced videos so it was fine in my eyes. your fast speech and small asides gave it a bit of a “history of the entire world, i guess” vibe to it, which i loved.

Wow so much information in the first few minutes!! I didn't mind the pace, but regarding Seo Taiji, maybe you could cut a little bit of the detail there and point people at Danny's previous video about them? I started listening to kpop during first gen, all the references and clips from that era made me feel really nostalgic 🥰 can't wait to see the finished product Looking at the comments here... maybe a bunch of links/resources in the comments section of the official vid would be nice. What the heck is black music?! I also agree with Isa, a confident send off with a quick mention of your patreon might hit better. Some of the audio cuts in the last handful of seconds were choppy, too. And for a future video, I would watch the heck out of 20 minutes of kdrama history <3

It’s fine!

I read and liked all of your comments and feedback! I read every single word and found many valid points! I will try to adjust some points in the video according to them :) Thanks so much!

I thought this was SUPER helpful. Thanks for making it. Of course BTS swept me right into Kpop so I appreciate the full history in 20 minutes. This was clearly a lot of work. Because of this video, I watched all the Seo Taiji with BTS YouTube videos I could. He looks amazing for being 48yo. Did he have work done? Can you do a video on idols or maybe even movie and Kdrama stars who have had plastic surgery? He he!

My main critique is the first 2:15 minutes cause I considered stopping after that. It's too fast. Considering that there are people who might not know much about kpop or Korean history or be familiar with Korean names, the information at the beginning can go over one's head. I think you should consider slowing down even though it would lead to a longer video. I would take out the time limit tbh or extend it to past 20 minutes. This is something people want to learn about so rushing through it feels like a disservice. Overall it's a great video with good information. Trying to compress 50-60 years of music into an understandable video is a huge challenge and I think you did well. One of the earlier genres you mentioned was black music. What does that mean? My mind went immediately to cultural appropriation in kpop and kpop artists trying to imitate black people and their style in music. Is that what you meant? The last thing, on your ending, the part where you ask people to share the video, saying you put a lot of work into it (while true and bravo! excellent work) and therefore people should share it, sounds a bit off? Maybe a bit like begging? I think a video like this is gonna be shared widely cause it's a topic people want to know more about whether they have been kpop fans for 10 years or 10 days. I think a more confident send off would be better. I'm glad you made this video and I am looking forward to the final version

Isa

Finally! I've been waiting for this. Thanks for all the hard work put into making such a compact history video :)

Enjoyed the first portion a lot, many of your viewers may not be familiar with the start-up process of the entire industry (three boys > 3/4 companies > 10000 groups), so I appreciate that you start with the idea that kpop is ultimately an industry fueled by capital. The first question I have is whether discussing social issues was a core factor in/focus of the first kpop groups (STJ&B, HOT...?). I cannot remember which groups exactly, but the point is that it was mentioned in 2 separate instances by 2 groups, hence it seemed to signal a trend. However the mention of highlighting social issues is not brought up again until BTS, a whole gen and a half later. Many fans attribute this as one of BTS’ differentiating factor from other (active) groups, so many may pick up on this. My suggestion is to maybe add a clarifying sentence on why there is an apparent diffusion of focus on social issues, and whether it was a critical factor of success (in the SK market). Another thing i picked up is that you only mention numbers for certain groups, but not others, and I wonder why, or hit songs for some and not others. Seems like you have chose different ways to measure success of the groups, and I wonder why. I also suggest changing the manner of presentation about SuperM. I understand that your point may be to highlight the ingenuity of their formation and their attempt to formalize globalization strategies, but there is risk of fanning a fan war if 1. you compare them directly to BTS (manner of transition) 2. you focus on their detractors before u ultimately conclude with their ingenuity. This narrative from “BTS: global pioneer” to “SuperM: new methods of globalizing kpop” is read as “SuperM: tried to be the next BTS but is failing”. When you were describing BIG BANG, use of words like “legendary” or “iconic” (can’t remember the exact words) are common hype words used on the internet, but bc i am not familiar with BB and am not a fan, i cannot actually comprehend how big they are from what you said, other than via the positive ideas associated with those words. Listing hit songs and daesangs (which u did for other groups) aren’t enough to justify your obviously larger reaction over them. Maybe add one point on why exactly they stood out from the other groups that warranted such reaction. Because this is a video essay that attempts to cover a huge topic in a short amount of time, maybe keep in mind that every point and every word matters. For eg, the detraction over the word “jopping”... the scale of this criticism compared to others brought up in the same video seems so disparate... Was this a SK (home economy) opinion that may be a serious thorn in commercial success or is it just an opinion loudly broadcasted on the internet (once again, prevalent in fan wars)? Of course, I am just speaking my assessment of your video in an off-the-cuff comment, since you asked for potential fires... I have never done a video essay myself, so of course i cannot understand the BTS operations and procedure of putting this video together. But one reading I get is that this video is a good introduction to kpop industry’s formation/formalization, expansion and globalization, with potential to introduce more critical questions in future videos. Appreciate the months of work that went into this video and am glad it’s going up soon! all the best

Great! A really huge bunch of info compressed into a concise summary - that surely means a lot of work. I really loved it, many thanks! (Another 20 mins on KDrama history maybe?...)

Palocz Emoke

Very informative but way to slow ! Seriously, slow the fuck down. It was too compressed. Maybe 25 or 27 minutes would gave been a better pace. Otherwise, a thumbs up from Steve_Ho.

Steven Pambello

I like the pace. You may want to define Black Music more clearly.

Mary Hodge

Not just Kpop history but Koreas history as well. Very in depth and I learned so much in 20 mins. Can't wait for the completed version.

I left my comments in the video comment section. Hopefully it’s helpful!

I thought it was great. I love the title of the video too, it really got my attention and I wanted to watch it. I love the history of anything and to tell how many minutes is a great way to tell the viewer how much time they need to invest so they can be sure to watch it when they have enough time.

Collett Litchard

I’m used to these type of speed-videos, so I had no problem with the pace! Thanks for another great video!!!

ajewell

I lasted 3 minutes and I'm exhausted. Too fast! It's like there's no punctuation. Or breathing.. Otherwise it was very interesting!

Kat Dearheart

i really enjoyed the 20 min . one of my comment is that you talk extremely fast in the first half so had a bit of a hard time ingesting all the information or take note some of the information to look it up later as i sometimes do for your songs explanations for example . any form of art doesn’t pop out of a vaccuum and is always inserted in a social context and as a continuum of something else and this video help enlighten us a bit about that for kpop
