DK News After Show 0623

Hey Ducks!

We will hold the DK News After Show at 10PM KST, June 23.

The topics discussed in today's DK News:

1. North Korea threatens South Korea with leaflets and blows up building :(

2. KPOP fans troll Trump rallies

3. KPOP concerts to resume in 2nd half of 2020? + special treatment for military to alleviate corona blues for KPOP artists?

Feel free to post any opinions, ideas, questions you have regarding these topics and we will try to address them in the After Show!

Recent (bout a year) fan, brand-new patron. Just got into k-pop a few years ago, and I appreciate a peer directly in tune with korean culture and news. I appreciate both your perspectives and insight into k-pop and korean entertainment and culture. It really helps understand everything in terms I can relate to. Don't really have any questions, but I do believe live concerts aren't going to be a thing until mid to late 2021, hopefully when a vaccine is in circulation. Sports & entertainment events are just not essential enough to warrant such mass gatherings. As much as I want the BTS MOTS Tour to happen, as OT7, especially while I'm in Japan, it's a loooongshot. Bang Bang Con showed that an online concert isn't the same, but works for the circumstances (multiview on a big screen was awesome!). Also, n00b question: where do we watch the livestream?

Thank you for changing the time! I watched one after show debate which started at 5am here in the UK 😂 The issue with the North is interesting ~ I remember years ago when they threatened to bomb the South and people were interviewed there asking if they were worried and they literally didn't care. I have to agree with both of you to try to keep the peace as much as possible but also to just leave the North to crumble by itself ~ sad for the people who live there but I think that's the only way Korea can reunite.

3am.... I’m scared to take a nap lol. The fact you guys are nonchalant about NK blowing up the building speaks volumes. It’s like you are are use to the childish antics. I would like to know more about the special treatment and how that will be applied.

What about Heung-Min? Is he required to do military service? Obviously, I realize that fútbol is far more popular than kpop in ROK. It would be good to find a middle ground where people could do their jobs and serve their time. What is the end game for military service? If it is to create a regimented work ethic for young men, I would argue two points. First, women should also be required to serve. Second, professional sports celebs and kpop celebs already have a regimented work ethic. I look forward to the chats each week. I also hope to meet you in person over samgyetang over the Chuseok holiday (that is if I am allowed in the country … 🥺 #flightbought).

3) I really want BTS to complete their Map of the Soul world tour with 7 members. Thus, I hope Korean Government postpone Jin's and Suga's enlistment. However, I agree with Eri, I don't think Korean public don't like if idols exempt from military service or even serve a shorter period. It may cause too much hate towards any group which is granted a special treatment. I also think it is now fair in general to treat people differently due to their economical status. As an ARMY myself, I wouldn't want any special treatment for BTS or any group, they should be the same with every Korean citizen.

2) I generally think that millennials and gen z is quite nonpolitical compared to the generation before them. I am also a late millennial and I think we mainly believe in individualism and this may lead us to underestimate our impact on society. Thus, I think it is a good thing that KPOP fans unite under a common cause and take actions about politics even though the action seems like not that impactful right now, they may lead great changes in the future.

1) Last week, when you talked about NK and their threats, I thought that they will only talk about it but not go this far and blow up a building. Have they done it before? Because you seem to not care about it.

i don’t know if you saw the reporter who asked txt about the Kpop fans trump protest, but it would be interesting to hear how international fans activism changes the artists role in promoting in foreign markets. I think many Kpop fans are marginalized people as it takes a certain level of open mindedness to become a Kpop fan and that is the reason Kpop fans tend to be overall very politically active and progressive. They are also people who tend to be active on social media since most Kpop isn’t in the general public spotlight here. Social media tends to increase awareness and heighten people’s opinions on both the left and the right.

Eri

I hope BTS makes the decision to do with their military service what they want to do and not feel pressure from fans. I do worry if they take an exemption how the general public in Korea reacts and its impact on the members. Do you all think the general public in Korea would care? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

Eri

On the military topic, maybe they can shorten the time to a year for some kpop artists - the ones who have made a significant impact on the korean economy. What that impact is, I'll leave it up to Korean govt to decide. For instance, I can talk about BTS because I follow them more than other artists. I do think they should serve, however, the level of impact that they have had on music worldwide should not go unnoticed. I understand that there are exemptions for athletes and other musicians (not kpop) and I think that BTS is somewhat deserving of that treatment. It's not like these guys are on vacation every time they travel to the US or other countries. They're working and VERY hard too. But again, I think a shortened version would be cool. It doesn't have to be a full exemption.

Joy

I actually appreciate the time change, at least I won't be sleepy! lol

Joy

Yup, he's in my town. lol

Joy

Lol! I used to follow Dave Disci when I first started getting into kpop but then I realized he's not very original.

Joy

The editing is so poor it gives the appearance of just rambling on for 10 minutes and not breathing. Lolol

Steven Pambello

And he's from New Yooooork. I recognized the accent. Lolol

Steven Pambello

Hey who is guy, Dave Disci, I think its pronounced Dave Dizzy or Dizxy Dave, I don't know. Anyway I thought there was something wrong with his talking until I realized it was poor editing. Lolol Another youtuber trying to muscle in on your turf doing a story on BTS. Puffft, armature. Lolol
