Not to be annoying... but my attention turned up 200% when Danny said SEVENTEEN... TT TT Guys, I need my SVT news, pls...

In the states, artists are complaining that producers and people with power are saying they want to have songwriting credit in exchange for giving a contract, or a guitar player might add a guitar line and they get songwriting credit, or even people who inspire artists or are in the room are asking for credit because the song would be different if they weren't in the room. It's crazy. Artists like Halsey have made savage comments about how ridiculous it is.

Charlotte Keith

I also keep on missing the live, since it would be 4am in my country...

Patricia

Probably it's gonna be Argentina. They have a lot of experience producing series, realities and also disney-like musical protagonist series that have become very successful through all Latin America (Brasil included) Spain, Portugal, Italy, etc. (Rebelde Way, Floricienta.. etc).

Ghettoblaster

Missed the live but caught the replay. Great discussion. I'm still moving forward in my recovery.

I would like to know if you guys think that Kpop Audition shows will help or hurt westerners view of Kpop? I haven't really watched audition shows but I feel like in the west they could maybe alienate kpop more for people not familiar with it (as it could be possible a more extreme first exposure to kpop).

Sarah Haynes

i watched this based on your reco. for a song Freeze it is pretty hot. i love the whole concept. i'm actually pretty interested now in this comeback. and i want that tee shirt. thanks.

Cathy

I didn't realize SM was 70, he looks amazing. i think all these NCT's will start cannibalizing's each other, but who knows. Nothing is too big to fail- i don't think people will be as interested in some of these shows in the US. yes the kpop fandom will but not the general public. it will be interesting to see. In the US there are child labor laws - so not sure how the strict kpop training will work here.

Cathy

This is off topic but I would love to see what you guys think of Tomorrow X Together’s new concept trailer for freeze. It’s seriously the best concept trailer I’ve ever seen. If you guys have some time at the end I would love to know what you think. https://youtu.be/n_PyjJ-WAXI

also about the teachers with their radical teaching... hmm. Interesting that this is coming up at the same time where the government is trying to ban the teaching of critical race theory in US schools. As a teacher myself, I think it’s very important that our schools are inclusive and safe places. This includes minority groups in relation to race, gender, and sexuality. We have multiple students at our school who are transgender and we talk about gender and sexuality in our classes because we have other students that refuse to call our trans students by their names and use the correct pronouns. They do this because they prioritize their own beliefs over their peers freedom to identify they way they want. This makes our parents sometimes mad, but I believe all schools should be safe places and teachers have to have the freedom to facilitate that. But obviously many parents would see me as leftist and radical. It all depends on your perspective though. I don’t see myself that way, I’m just creating safe spaces.

Eri

I’m interested in learning more about writers in kpop and how that all actually works and if it is any different in the states.

Eri

I totally agree! Any group the American public sees, they will just think it's BTS anyway. I watched MAMA's for the first time and honestly the lack of variety in genre made me kinda bored and I'm someone that enjoys K-Pop, so I can't imagine how the general American public would take something like that. You need room for Rap, Western Pop, Country, legacy acts, etc. and there's only so much run time. And their talent shows will fall in line with the other dozens of talent shows we have where most contestants, even winners, don't really go on to have huge success. They get 15 minutes and fame and then that's about it.

Erika Thompson

I agree, especially with recent scrutinization of older reality audition shows like America's Next Top Model

Hannelie

NCT sounds like the K-pop version of the Law & Order TV franchise in the US. Everyone wants to be SVU but inevitably someone will be Trial By Jury — a failure.

Ginger Noona

The audition program concept is already completely played out in the US. Just look at the ratings for American Idol and the Voice. Those shows haven’t produced even a moderately successful recording artist in years. The kpop trainee system is not viewed favorably in the states. Anything even remotely looking manufactured or contrived will be rejected.

Christina Morgan

I wonder if the American Produce 101 group will sing in English. I tend to agree with Erika, that this is not going to make a huge splash here. I think that there is a good K pop following here, but America doesn't put up with too much saturation. BTS seems to be the exception. I'm not saying that they won't have any success, but I think that K pop is still a niche category. Also, I see no way possible for the trainee system to take place here outside of these competitions. We have strict labor laws and I don't see these slave contracts working here. Just my opinion.

Sayonda

Western media IS failing. The current #1 sold 11,000 copies! That said, I think US awards shows will continue gatekeeping so I doubt there will be a K-Pop takeover. It's why BTS are shut out of major categories. They may allow one or two groups, but not much more. Re: NCT Hollywood, Mark is Canadian, but even still poor Mark! Just the idea of using him for this...the guy's probably going through an identity crisis in his gazillionth SM group!
