It's Thursday. So here's some Moonlight Wanderers. ^_^
Pokemon games are a tad formulaic. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, but when Sun and Moon came along and changed up the formula a bit, it was welcome. One of the weirder changes though was the identity of the rival. Like, was there one at all? Depending on how one interprets things, I've heard everything from Gladion as the rival because he acts like it, to the professor as the rival because he has the starter strong to the player's, to even the player as Hau's rival. It's all debatable. Personally, I suspect that defining this just wasn't that important to the developers' narrative, so it was purposely left in question.
But for my story, I want a clear rival! Even if I have to make my own original character for it! Enter Maya's rival, Midori.
You may recall from Maya's introduction, that although the story will take place in Alola region, she's originally from Kanto. And as part of that, she wanted to have her adventure there before the move happened. In fact, she and Midori were going to embark on their respective journeys together, both as friendly rivals and as a couple. Alas, they would break up - and Maya would have to up and move to another region - before their adventure would come to be.
But that doesn't mean they stop talking. "Technology is incredible", after all, and they can continue to communicate. And even though Kanto's Indigo League Challenge and Alola's Island Challenge are different beasts, they can still compete, comparing both progress and catches. Maybe battle is even possible. I'll leave specifics to the story for now. ^_^
I do of course want to mention on the Pokemon too though. They might be rivals from different regions, but Midori's Bulbasaur (Herbert), does still have the type advantage on Maya's Popplio (Tsukiko). In true rival fashion. (And no, I haven't forgotten about the Alolan Grass starter; don't worry, Rowlet fans!) ;P
As always, thanks for reading, viewing, and patroning. And like before, thoughts and questions are totally welcome. Also, I hope the jargon isn't too confusing for anyone less into Pokemon. All the more reason questions are welcome.
Until next time, take care, everyone. ^_^
