MW - Random Mons 3

Another assortment of Pokemon for Moonlight Wanderers today.  From left to right, we have Rockruff, Phantump, and Misdreavus on the top row, with Lurantis, Fomantis, and Cloyster on the bottom row.

I want to draw special attention to Cloyster, who I kinda included here as a joke more than anything, but was actually a pretty valuable artistic experience.  If you hadn't heard, as of yesterday I'm a year post-op (SRS).  A couple weeks before my surgery back then, Pokemon Go came out, and I made some cheesy juvenile snark about how I'm gonna catch a Cloyster soon.  Then the morning after my surgery, I woke up in my hospital bed, opened the app, and actually caught a Cloyster!  It was one of those Pokemon I'd never really noticed before, but since then I've come to find it pretty cool (besides the dumb jokes regarding what it resembles).

My including it here was meant to just be a silly reference to that, but it turned out to be the most challenging thing I drew in this set.  And you might notice, it's actually got an unusual amount of shading for my art.  Still not a lot (because I'm not very good at it), but enough to give it more depth than usual.  Typically, I feel like I can get away with not doing it and still have my work look fine.  But Cloyster's design kinda forces it.  There's so many protrusions of the what are technically the same color, that all comes off very flat and incomplete-looking without some shading.

And now I'm really glad I included it, because for future sets (or even the comic itself), I may try to do this more.  It's brought to my attention, a certain value to shading I'd never really considered before.  Maybe this all very abstract, but it was a learning experience for me.  And if anyone's still wondering why I'm planning to a Nuzlocke comic instead of something totally original... this is why.  When I'm just left to my own devices, it's very easy to just keep doing what works and never really come out of my comfort zone.  But when doing something like this (which is basically a glorified fancomic), it forces to me to draw things I'd never even considered previously, and helps me to flex my skills quite a bit.  So when I am ready to do the next original work, it'll be that much better!

Again, Cloyster was tacked onto this later, and originally I was going to spend a lot of this blurb just gushing about Lurantis being my favorite Gen 7 Pokemon, and very likely my new favorite Grass Type.  But that got derailed into something that I hope was much more interesting. XD

As always, thanks for reading, viewing, and patroning, everyone.  Questions and comments are always welcome!

Later, all.  I wish you all a fantastic day!  ^_^
