Hi all,
Happy August! As you may be able to guess from the lovely art by Melissa Pagluica that accompanies this week's issue, we're starting the month in a fairytale frame of mind, with the first part of Alena Indigo Anne Sullivan's story, "Gorse Daughter, Sparrow Son":
Jocelyn did not prick her finger on a magic spindle and fall into an enchanted slumber. She fairly regularly pricked her fingers on various spindles (though she really preferred bobbins) and carding combs and other sundries, but they were no more magical than anything else, and her sleep was not particularly enchanting. She woke with tangled hair each morning, and no kisses were required for the process. There was no incident with scorned fairies at her birth, no castle full of people cursed to sleep for a hundred years.
Also in this week's issue you'll find a poem by Kayla Bashe, Andrea Phillips' latest Metagames column (on the team effort of video game creation), and reviews of the anthology Defying Doomsday, the TV series of The Shannara Chronicles (yep), and the latest Tim Powers. Enjoy!
P.S. Among other things, August will be (if we finish getting things organised in good order) the start of this month's fund drive, which also means we'll be sorting out rewards for those of you who have been with us here since last September (thank you!). Watch this space for further details.
P.P.S. I feel like I'm going to jinx it by saying anything, but if all goes according to plan we'l have our new website up this month as well. It's tantalisingly close. Please touch all your wood and cross all your fingers that the final stages go smoothly. (We may also invite some of you to have a look at it...)
