August ebook, a Utopian special, and a Fireside response

Hi all,

*thud*

Here is your ebook! It is a big one this time, what with having five weeks, not one but two stories this week (see below), Erin Horakova's opus of an essay from last week, and everything else. All wrapped up in Melissa Pagluica's lovely art for "Gorse Daughter, Sparrow Son", as you can see from the attached image.

About this week: we have a utopian special, to mark this year being the 500th anniversary of More's original Utopia ... not that we talk about that. Instead we reprint Rokheya Shekhawat Hossein's 1905 story, "Sultana's Dream" alongside Leo Mandel's 2011 response/extension, "Fifty Years in the Virtuous City". We also have Seth Dickinson interviewing Mandel, as well as Jo Walton and Ada Palmer in conversation about writing utopia, and assorted reviews, kicking off with Aishwarya Subramanian on The Explorers Guild.

We also, on a different note, have an editorial offering our initial response to the Fireside report of a few weeks ago that highlighted the lack of representation of black writers in SF magazines. I say initial and mean it: we have some things we want to do immediately, such as (hopefully) recruit more black first readers (details here, if you're interested), and some things we want to discuss before we move ahead, but we're open to other suggestions as well. So please do have a read, and let us know what you think, either in comments there or here, or in email if you prefer.

thanks,

Niall
