It is essential to understand the anatomy and muscles! Even though it will all be covered up by fur, it will have much more dimension due to the fundamentals being present.
Another great aspect of working for the bones up is that is will allow you to create much more dynamic poses. If a sculpt is giving you too much trouble, try sketching it first.
