Hey Adam thanks for the video. Great to hear your thoughts. I was surprised by your opinion of Beau and I feel a key component of the film's message did not click with you. For me this component is about relationships with subtly abusive parents. You mention this with how his mother acts on the phone but I don't think you fully engaged with this aspect. I related to this very closely due to my relationship with my own mother. Beau is not a passive participant within his existence, he is constantly trying to find what he thinks could be the right path to avoid harm. Beau cannot tell when his mistakes are his or not. He cannot determine what is right or wrong. He was raised in an environment where what he believed were Right and Wrong had wild, unpredictable, and often harmful consequences. This feeling is what you experience when you have a mother like Beau's in real life. Beau's mother reacts to him in ridiculous and exaggerated ways, she undermines his perspective of reality. You as the audience member are constantly left feeling what Beau feels, "Is this really happening to me? Am I just playing it up? Is this all actually my fault?" The heightened reality plays into this. We are constantly questioning the reality of what he is experiencing because that's what his mother does to him. The ultimate demonstration of this is when Beau's mother reveals she is actually still alive, and that the entire situation was set up to try and catch Beau in a lie. It's the most ridiculous thing a person could do, something even Beau's anxiety could not predict, yet his mother does it. This reality experienced by living with his mother all his life is what colors all of his other experiences and makes his understanding of reality so skewed. You become infected with it yourself as a viewer, you start to think "Was this real? Was this setup on purpose? How deep does it go?" It expresses Beau's own anxiety directly through your perception of the narrative. Mona's actions, especially near the end of the movie, are especially important to drive this home. Regarding the theater scene, I think it goes into Beau's desire for escapism while showing him a life he could have experienced. A few times in the film, when talking with his mother, Beau focuses on the background audio instead to try and drown her out. He is so eager to dive into this falsehood and escape. This fantasy within his mind is the freest experience Beau has in the entire film. I agree that this segment is the most detached from the overall experience, but I still enjoyed what it added. Regarding the length of the film and its use of your time as viewer. Sometimes when I listen to your thoughts on movies I feel like your experience as a viewer is clashing with your experience as a reviewer. I fear that the expectations put on you to watch and discuss a huge number of movies can negatively affect your ability to experience a film. For me, it's going to be a few days before I watch another movie, and I will be solely digesting this film in my mind for quite a while before watching another one. If I was expected to watch another movie the next day and think about it just as deeply, I would not be doing so at my full capacity. I can only imagine the effect after years of watching movies so often. I felt this much more strongly in 2020-2021 and I am very happy to say that I feel your love of movies more strongly in your recent content. As a long time fan my favorite thing about you is your PASSION for film and art in general, and I fear that passion waning as you push yourself to produce large amounts of content. Please take care of the fire inside you! I hope in the future you can give this movie a rewatch and connect with it more deeply. I have not seen Midsommar or Hereditary but this movie really clicked with me and I enjoyed it much more than any movie I have seen recently. 2023-05-14 22:11:07 +0000 UTCI saw the NY premiere of BlackBerry a few days ago, followed by a Q&A with Matt Johnson... I've been a really big fan of NTBTS for a long time so meeting Matt was pretty great. I didn't expect him to stay and have long talks with literally anyone who had a question for him. Eventually, the theater kicked us out and he just stood out on the street in the rain talking to and taking photos with literally everyone. He is a super cool dude and I really hope people support this film. (He told me if this does well it's gonna fund season 3 of NTBTS, so I'm rooting for it.)

I found the movie to be amazing and one of my top favorite movies of all time (Midsommar is up there too). I love the fact that there is no redeeming ending or finish to the film. The constant dread and overall feeling of anxiety while watching the movie was something I haven't felt while watching a film and it's something I want more of. My wife actually had to take a break about halfway through, walk around and get concessions. I was glued to my chair the whole time trying to guess what was next and it was completely unpredictable in my book. *Spoilers* my wife thought he was going to have a happy ending when he took the boat off into the darkness and it was just going to fade to black, she was not happy when the kangaroo court scene happened lol. Overall I loved this film and your points are completely valid, but I don't think I'll ever feel anything like this in a movie again.
