I normally agree with 90% of the movies you review and I can understand why it is getting as much praise as it is. I unfortunately did not enjoy this movie. There were things I did like about it, the cinematography was great and the sets were awesome as well, but after the 4th sex scene in a row I started to lose interest in anything else the movie had to offer. The movie theater experience was also very strange, there was a group of ladies that thought this was the funniest movie they've ever seen, roaring laughter from start to finish. I don't just mean at the parts that were supposed to be comedic, from the opening scene were Bella/Victoria jumps from the bridge they were howling with laughs. The soundtrack I liked in the beginning but maybe it might have been the theaters sound system but the highs were too much. Ear piercing during the film, we watched it at the Alamo Drafthouse and it's possible the EQ was off. My ears were ringing when I left the movie. I could tell my wife wasn't into the movie at all, and funny enough everytime she left the movie to go and take a break from the constant sex scenes everytime she came back there was more of them. When I talked to her after the movie she said the concept of Bella doing all this with a literal brain of a baby in her is what was messing with my wife. Just how people in the movie were taking advantage of a literal child was too much. The one time she came back in the theater and it was the scene where the French man is teaching his kids about sex was it for her. I've never read the book and I knew nothing about this movie until I saw this post about it. As a film it is very well shot and the editing and visuals are great. I just couldn't get into it. I feel like it's impossible to compare the two movies but Beau is Afraid was my favorite movie of 2023 and a 10/10 IMO and I would put Poor Things closer to a 6/10.

When I was discussing it with my partner afterwards, he had interpreted the opening act being in black and white to mirror newborns not seeing in colour until they mature to a certain extent. Then as the viewer we are newborns to the world that is presented and it's supposed to mirror this concept but also catch us off guard in a way where we are disarmed enough to just accept the world for what it is. I saw comments online claiming that the film used overdone feminist tropes like "finding power through sex", but for me I thought this film was fascinating because while you could see the themes through that lens, a key aspect was that she has no life experience to even base the concept of "finding power" on. For her, she just likes sex. In her interactions with men she has no concept of what her "place" was meant to be in that society and anyone who tries to control her is driven to insanity when their traditional attempts at manipulation which are derived from the societal norms have no effect. I thought this was such a unique way to present these themes where the story itself has concrete reasoning for it, something I've never seen before. But as you said in the video, while that was a part of the theming in the film, it was also so much more than that. I couldn't (haven't really) stop thinking about it. I just wish people had the media literacy to understand the genius behind films like this to challenge an audience in ways they aren't used to. Anyway great video! I have been lacking friends who have seen this to dump my thoughts on.

2024-01-31 03:27:29 +0000 UTCOn the subject of how Yorgos and his team find such amazing talent - I was in the same class at Music School as Jerskin Fendrix, who composed the score (this is his first time scoring a film iirc). Apparently Yorgos listened to his first album - called Winterreise, if you’re interested - and pretty much said ‘yep, this is who I want on poor things’. What a guy.

Brings me to tears just thinking about how beautiful it is, all the way deep into the soul of this movie. It's a piece of art I've never experienced before and never thought I would. I can't imagine every single human being who is clearly at the pinnacle of their craft coming together to make this happen.
