Greetings, Patreon Pals!  I’d really hoped to post this one yesterday, but I got stuck in 4 different airports for over 24 hours trying to get from El Lay to New York, so I could help out with some prep stuff for Joe Bob’s Jamboree at the Mahoning. ‘Twas a very long day, and apparently many airports have 💩 wifi, so I gave up trying to post it till today.

Why was it so important to post yesterday, you ask? It was officially the anniversary of the very first episode of Monstervision with Joe Bob! However,  if it started on the 28th it’d still be on the 29th, so I say both days are valid for celebrating!!  😉

I asked JB if he had any thoughts about this first episode, and he said, “All I remember is that we used the same set and the same furniture as the last episode of Drive-In Theater. I don’t know of another example where a network used a cancelled show to create a new show, that wasn’t actually a new show, because Monstervision already existed.”  True, JB! You are very unique in that. 🥰

It‘a fascinating to me to see how different this premiere episode was compared  to later ones. You can tell they were very much influenced by the Drive-In  Theater formula when they first started. I’d also forgotten it started out on Friday nights (though JB asked me to point out that “it quickly went to Saturdays because that was the lowest rated night of the week, They were less afraid of putting something edgy on then.” )

Enjoy…and Happy Anniversary, Monstervision Maniacs! ❤️❤️❤️

(Special Note: Big thanks to Chris Vincent for reminding me about this very special day. It very well might’ve slipped my mind otherwise! ❤️)

Best decision Ted Turner ever made.

So great ! I've rented the movies and watched every friggin' one of these with the time codes. Thanks Darcy! So appreciative of this - you rox!!!

Nigel Kneale has said Doctor Who heavily plagerized his work from Quatermass, but I don't think he ever tried to sue. Also Joe Bob gets it slightly wrong. Quatermass was not originally a stage play. Kneale wrote it as a teleplay, and it was filmed like a stage play I suppose. But it was still for the BBC, not the stage.

Ah the Quatermass Xperiment, I've seen that one. It has a few sequels and might have been the inspiration for Doctor Who. Just before he became the Doctor David Tennent was in a version of Quatermas that was performed live on the BBC with Jason Flemyng playing Quaterman, I remember watching that. In 1996 Thora Hird was still alive and acting, she died in 2003. Yay, I know stuff.

JB's skewering of The Creeping Unknown is hilarious. 1 star? Ouch. Surprised he didn't mention that under the original title The Quatermass Experiment it was a popular television show in the UK, before they made it into a movie. The movie spawned two sequels and was influential on later stuff ranging from Doctor Who to the X-Files. John Carpenter is a big fan of the Quatermass films.

Carrie was 6 times? Wow.

The dry ice is a nice touch. Maybe the high sheriffs could spring for some on Halloween.

The Hand should only be twice

Joe Bob hosted Maximum Overdrive 3 times on Monstervision but I believe Carrie holds the record at 6 times in the 4 years he was on Monstervision. The Exorcist was another one they showed a lot (I think 5 times).

Johnny Bell

Like others here, I too remember this night. Thanks, Darcy, for all the effort in putting up the time codes.

I saw a later episode of The Hand on Monstervision, so clearly movies were repeated during the TNT era. How many times was Maximum Overdrive shown? Lol

so cool to see the very first monstervision! thx, darcy!

The 29th is also my birthday! I have to say, I like the idea of kinda-sorta sharing it with MonsterVision!

I remember watching this episode in 96 when I was in the sixth grade. It made Me want to be careful about sticking my hand out the window of a moving vehicle. And It was a comforting show and sometimes I would stay up late to make sure that some of my family members were safe.

I'm so excited! I just bought The Hand on Blu-ray a few weeks ago.
