Strays & The Beast Within (Air Date: 1/3/98)

Happy Splatterday Night, Patreon Paks! it’s officially been 24 hours since the start of our Walpurgisnacht festivities and I’m still not fully recovered. (I‘m not sure any of us will ever fully recover after witnessing a mead-ed out Joe Bob. 😉)

Tonight’s ep is formatted a bit differently from most Monstervisions. It includes some clips from the movies and also the full closing credits for The Beast Within. I’m not sure why they did that, but it seemed appropriate after the letter we read last night discussing sticking around for the credits..

Thank you so much to everyone who  joined us for the show last night, and to everyone at the Colonisl Theater tonight for JB’s Redneck show. I was so looking fwd to that one, but still having ID issues and the Newark airport gave me 💩 about flying anywhere but home. 😞 Gonna get all this figured out in time to be at Frankencon next weekend, though. (Hopefully… 🤞) Time codes below:

Start the ...

First segment: Before the flick.

Second segment: About 24:16 in after the door shuts.

Third segment: About 27:42 in after the man walks by the pickup truck.

Fourth segment: About 30:44 in after the phone repairman reaches for the flashlight, then goes motionless.

Fifth segment: About 46:41 in after Paul walks to the veterinarian's station wagon.

Sixth segment: About 51:47 in after the blackout.

Seventh segment: About 1:02:50 in after Lindsey strokes Tessa's hair.

The Beast Within (segments start at 10:35)

Start the ...

First segment:  Before the flick (or between them if you are doing the authentic double-feature experience).

Second segment: About 14:32 in after the shot of Michael sweating on the hospital bed.

Third segment: About 29:50 in after the shot of the bloody hand with the hamburger meat in it.

Fourth segment: About 52:11 in after the close-up of the mortician.

Fifth segment: About 1:01:44 in after Doc Schoonmaker falls to the floor.

Sixth segment: About 1:14:04 in after Michael says "Kill me" but before the cut to the shot of the moon.

Seventh segment: About 1:22:15 in after Doc Schoonmaker looks out the window.

Eighth segment: Stop the flick at 1:23:37 after the shot of them looking up at the corpse in the tree and then just watch the Patreon video straight through since it has the end of the movie and the credits.

Comments

Thanks for Paul Harveying up the rest of the story, that makes perfect sense.

You are correct, Shane. Was just looking in the archives and the first couple of MonsterVisions of 1998 were recycled because he was doing the Super Bowl marathon specials.

Currently watching the "Strays" segments. I know exactly why they left the movie clips in. Because Joe Bob is evil! Though he's mellowed significantly since back then? My cat is currently running all around the house looking for the invading cats he's hearing through the speakers. I'm gonna end up with a neurotic cat. Thanks Joe Bob!

My powers of nerd deduction tell me this originally aired on 7/26/96, and was recycled for 1/3/98. Maybe JB hadda have his appendix removed that week or somethin'. The window gag dates back to the earliest Monstervision episodes where they were still finding their footing with the new multi-break format, and the particularly short breaks also bear that out. They also hadda put the Drive-In totals in the center of the screen because at the time they weren't putting them on the screen at all and thus, hadn't filmed a wide segment for the totals to be inserted to the right of JB. They did add in the current (at the time) musical cues to the episode, though, which it wouldn't have had at the time of its original airing. Also telling is that towards the end of the second feature he'd generally name the movies being shown the next week, and that didn't happen here because if they'd left that clip in it would have been inaccurate. You'll probably come across a tape with this same lineup and a 7/26 air date at some point, but I'm pretty sure the broadcast is exactly the same, less the aforementioned updates (no Drive-In totals listed on the screen, no music) to make it match the modern (at the time) format. I should probably go outside for a while.

I remember watching this one live!

newark airport is Always a problem :/ ive learned that you Always have to watch the credits. i suck at bowling but wholy smokes! lookit the poster for 'Motel Hell' in the background! loveeee it! i have one. andddd , see that giant green monster figurine in the background as well? i Also have That! i just have no idea Who he is , or what he's from , if anything. if someone knows , id love to hear about it. one last thing , Joe Bob's so right. 'Strays' reeks! >_<

Just joined the Patreon at the Patron Saint tier and I can already tell this was a great decision. Thank you for all that you are doing Darcy and hope you both are recovering from that all of that craziness on Friday. Also, please come to Seattle!

If you can't fly you could always get the train....wait I minute I'm going to see how feasible that is...alrighty I seem to have grossly underestimated the size of the US so maybe not the train. I hope you had a Wundebar Walpurgisnacht and a Belter of a Beltane.

That really stinks. I hope you get those issues straightened out and I really hate that happed to you.

Happy Walpurgisnacht. It's totally a thing now. We're making it happen. Can I bring hot dogs and marshmallows to the bon fire ? 😀
