Further evidence that Americans have way too much time on their hands: people complaining about the singing of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" at the Super Bowl.
First of all, the Super Bowl is a professional sports event staged by a group of businessmen--I think there are 30 of them, but there may be several thousand more since the Packers are owned by the whole city of Green Bay--and these owners decide how they would like to celebrate, and you can COME TO THEIR PARTY OR NOT. I recommend you come--they're known for putting on pretty good shows.
Second, is there any possible reading of the lyrics to "Lift Every Voice and Sing" that means anything except joy and optimism?
Third, I would rather we have a song telling everybody to sing about the future rather than a song telling us to look at a tattered flag from the War of 1812.
Fourth, or we could sing BOTH SONGS, which is exactly what they did.
Grinches go home.
