The Skepticrat 001 - Prostate of the Union Edition

This is a sneak peek for all of the wonderful supporters that made the show possible. Enjoy.

Love the new show, as brilliant as we've all come to expect from you guys. One question though: Will it always be so U.S focussed or will there be some content in there for us foreigners?

Lee Rawlins

Enjoyed very much! I need to move further away from work now so I have more commute time to listen. :-)

Tom Hail

You can try.

Daniel Kirsten

Thanks for separating this out. Some of us atheists live in all those little secular democracies the other side of a big expanse of water. While we like to help with the global fight against American religious expansionism your politics is way beyond our help. We have enough problems of our own. good luck and i hope we can find someone to rip off your style over here.

Hi. Great job on the new show. It met with my expectations. I'm glad to hear that the music is going to be changed. That was my only critique of the show. I felt that the word duotribe felt weird at first but, in the long run, I don't think that it will matter. For those who know about the diatribe segment, they'll know there is a connection and probably not care (except when they have to scrape the bottom of the barrel for negative feedback) and for those who've never heard SA will understand that its a diatribe with two people. I like everything else. Really everything. It was such a good first episode. Keep up the vulgarity please. I like my news spicy. The show was great. You two are awesome.

Hunting panties. Batteries not included.

The only thing i can point out is not enough lists. Needs more lists.

Daniel Kirsten

Fuck yes. Awesome !!

"Petty Partisan Bickering" is not what we want to stop - it is what we want to keep happening - partisan bickering is one way to keep congress from enacting stupid laws. It should be very hard to make or change laws - if it is too easy, we get "anti spitting in public" laws and other stupid things. Of course, If we could get fewer dumb-shits in congress to begin with ...

Thanks. We've done some creative experiments with the left/right thing, and in our experience adding even the slightest overlap reduces the effectiveness of most of the jokes, though some of them work better with the overlap, or even simultaneously. As for switching which ear speaks first, we actually did that once in this bit, but which side speaks first is a product of the joke itself (some jokes work better with the left first, others with the right) and from what I can tell, the more often you do that, the harder it is to catch what's being said by which side. It seems far easier to "get" each joke when one side always (or at least almost always) speaks first. My guess is that if you put something together closer to what you're suggesting, you'd hear upon listening why we don't do much overlap. I definitely agree that the instructions should make it clearer that everyone's supposed to leave both headphones in, but on virtually all devices, they won't actually isolate stereo (even if something is set only to the right track, the device itself will push some amount of it to the left track automatically unless you go out of your way to set it not to), so the upshot is that even people who remove a headphone will generally get the whole bit. That being said, I should definitely think of a clearer way to phrase it. Thanks for the input.

After finishing ep1, I think I would even listen to your knitting podcast. I'll hold off on criticism until a few more shows have come and gone.

Left/Right is awesome, but could still use a more fine tuned edit (I know, it's almost impossible already, and you are getting better at it). a) reduce the delay going into the L/R b) overlap just a little (100ms?) to imply simultaneity c) maybe alternate which side speaks first based on which phonemes overlapping would maximize comprehension. d) the instructions are misleading, the is no need to remove either headphone! Otherwise, it's already good enough to pay(treon) for, but thanks for the free sample.

First of all, thanks for all the detail. Exactly what we were hoping for. And secondly, yes, Lucinda will definitely be appearing in the new show, probably as our occasional "roaming reporter." Kind of wish we'd gotten her into the first episode like we did on SA. Appreciate the input.

As a junkie for politics, I really enjoyed the show, a lot. Very balanced and funny and it'll be a perfect addition to my regular stuff for all things politics. It's going to make me look forward to mondays, kinda. But as requested, here's a few criticisms. The biggest is that i think you should try and make this show completely independent from the other, it mostly is, but you still used the scathing atheist show to kinda lean on and repurposed the segments, which is good. No need to re-invent the wheel. But i know a few light believers who would love this podcast but were not into the scathing atheist for whatever reason. (I know, weird! What's not to like?). I would like to turn them on to this show and i think you should round it out to where they're not "not getting" some of the segments because it's referencing the other podcast. For example the "duo-tribe". First off, I really liked that both of you are doing it, good shit, but the reference of duo-tribe leans on the SA podcast and it may go over the heads of the listeners that would exclusively listen to just this podcast. Critique 2. - I'm not sure what the word of the day was about. I was thinking it would be referenced or something later, or at least relate to something but I think it was just thrown into the show as something interesting. Would be cool to have it relate. Or maybe I'm too much of an idiot and didn't catch the reference. Left and right headphone part was cool but, like when used on the SA, I would think it's not going to be a permanent segment, just something fun to do every now and then. Can't wait to see what else will be there in the coming shows. Headlines news is awesome. Good choices on stories, and great commentary. I like that not all of the show is politics. You guys are some funny mother fuckers!! Like the story about the underwear that didn't give the orgasm sensation. It's not a story you could really do on SA because it's not religious. This podcast is a good place to put it! Overall, i really enjoyed the show and am looking forward to more. Thanks guys!! One question. Has it been decided if Lucinda is going to come into this podcast at anytime?

Abel J

ANOTHER disrespectful and dishonourable display of dick jokes! When will it end. Won't someone think of the children? Sign me up boys.

Hearty Fartblast

Really liked the first installment. I liked the right/left earphone bit as well for making fun of the shitheads on the far right as well as the shitheads on the crazy left. Please don't forget about the indecisive shitheads in the middle that don't care enough to form an opinion.

Gerald Lott

Scott, sorry you don't "get" the name, but based on our research up to this point, you're in a small minority. The suffix "-crat" means "one who advocates for a type of rule or government," thus "skepticrat" would mean, "one who advocates for skepticism in government." And "The Scathing Skeptic" would have been reduced to "The SS," which is bad.

The Scathing Atheist

Among other things, I love the right/left headphone bit.

Mike & Michelle

This was fantastic! Really enjoyed the left/right channel bit, very clever. I would gladly subscribe to and pledge per episode for this as well.

Nick Cuskey

So it's becoming clearer and clearer that Monsieur Enright uses dick jokes to obfuscate just how smart and well-educated he really is.

April Poff

Keep making fun of all sides. There is plenty of stupid to be exposed. I would like hear about politicians doing reasonable things that we can support. Over the air talk radio definitely rallies around their candidates.

Mister CPU

Wow... what a funny, and well-balanced show! The content met my high expectations for humor and quality, while on the other end of the scale, the new name is absolute Skepticrap! I get the connection to 'The Aristocrats'; but, like a big cock trying to penetrate a little puppy's ass, it's much too forced. Also, it doesn't tell me anything about the show at a glance. When I first saw the name 'Scathing Atheist' I know exactly what to expect. 'Scathing' is now the key word in your 'brand', thus 'The Scathing Skeptic' would have been a better choice, IMHO. Loved the left/right ear segment... those are always funny :) Peace

Scott Hansen

I was actually going to ask that.. Will we have to pay extra for this podcast? Also, thanks guys! Will let you know what I think in about an hour! :-)

Anthony Ryan

Oh, and in case anybody was curious, no, you weren't charged for this episode through Patreon or anything... this one's on us.
