AMA February 2019
Added 2019-02-24 23:29:48 +0000 UTCIn this Patreon exclusive, Eli will teach you how to make the perfect cup of coffee (spoiler alert, it's "vindictively"), Noah will reveal his long term plans for Tom over at Cognitive Dissonance, and Heath will insist he isn't a racist.

2019-03-03 18:09:06 +0000 UTCI always interpret the "Noah is boring" gag as "Noah has to be the grown-up in the room". He has to cover the background, steer the conversation, and remind Eli he takes up enough of Andrew's valuable time.

2019-03-03 18:08:07 +0000 UTCAgain, thanks. Now I’m going to have to make a list to work through of all the books you three have recommended...

2019-03-03 13:05:50 +0000 UTC"Wait a minute, Juanita. Make up your mind. This Snow Crash thing—is it a virus, a drug, or a religion?" Juanita shrugs. "What's the difference?"

2019-03-03 13:04:18 +0000 UTCAs both a smoker and a fat person, hard agree. Thank you for wording it so elegantly.

2019-02-28 13:14:45 +0000 UTCAs somebody who had a 17 year morphine addiction, I am so fucking happy it wasn’t nicotine and that’s one BASTARD chemical and it honestly fucks with the brain!! You do you Noah you’re not an idiot and i get really annoyed at holier than thou people!

2019-02-28 07:47:54 +0000 UTCI'm glad you talked about Heath being funny -- in my opinion, he is the funniest of the three of you, and that is saying a lot because all three of you are hilarious. Heath's dry, self-deprecating wit and deadpan delivery is not only brilliant, but the perfect balance between Noah's acerbic wit and Eli's outrageousness. I went to the live GAM in Austin and honestly, I was a little disappointed that Heath didn't speak more. So talk more, Heath. You're hilarious!

2019-02-28 02:21:55 +0000 UTCI think a lot of the smoking shaming comes out of school age efforts to stop kids from starting in the first place since it is so hard to quit. Everyone has something they should give up to be healthier, but since they world’s busy burning down it’s not really the time.

2019-02-27 01:19:55 +0000 UTCI really don’t get the Noah is boring running gag. Noah’s citation needed episodes are generally extremely interesting. I loved the New Coke episode (it’s honestly one of my favorites). He brought us gold like the Goiania accident, Biosphere 2, and the ESRB. Even the calendar episode was entertaining. Does this mean I’m boring too?

2019-02-26 02:15:25 +0000 UTCThis is the right place to post. They don't always get to all questions. There are also questions they won't take for various reasons (it's up to them after all).

2019-02-26 02:10:56 +0000 UTCI posted a question but it didn't get read or answered on the show. The same thing happened a few months ago (or so?) with Cog Dis. Is the Patreon page the correct place to post our questions? Or is the a page where our questions should have been posted? I must be doing something wrong.

2019-02-25 22:31:14 +0000 UTCFirst off, thanks for doing an AMA despite your very tight schedules. Second, in response to Noah, I agree that the number 1 reason not to shame people over health behaviors is that it's mean. The number 2 reason is that maintaining weight loss over a period of years, like maintaining smoking cessation, is very rare, to the point at which it needs to be balanced against the costs in time, effort, and money, not to mention the opportunity costs. I think we agree on those points. In the AMA (which I realize is not scripted) you mentioned that there may be positive effects of fat shaming. As far as psychological science can tell, that's not true. There is moderate evidence that fat shaming is ineffective in promoting improved health behaviors and I've not found any meaningful counter-evidence (i.e., no evidence that fat shaming actually increases health behaviors). I realize this seems counter-intuitive. If a behavior is followed by punishment, it should decrease. But that assumes that unhealthy eating (or leading a sedentary lifestyle, etc.) is a single behavior. In reality, fat shaming teaches fat people to hide their high calorie eating from critics. The behavior of publicly eating junk food might decrease (might!), but there are plenty of opportunities to eat junk food in private that can compensatorily increase.
