I assume the Autism scare has been been birthed, or contributed to, by the increase in adult autism diagnosis. Forget that some of those diagnosis being misdiagnosed because we still know only so much about mental health (though we unarguably know a hell of a lot more than we used to) it is very quite possible that a good majority of those diagnosed should have diagnosed as children but due to having Slipped through the cracks on account of the gaps in our knowledge & understanding of autism was even larger & more profound that it is now (at a point where many of those gaps are being filled in more & more at faster rates thanks to the help from well educated autistic people contributing to our knowledge & understanding.
