How awful for you. I some times turn to Diatribe 153 (ep Quaranimaniacs)) when I need a palette cleanser from some particularly religiously obnoxious member of my family.. It's not only dripping in outrage, it is funny as hell, and the closing lines seem particularly apropos to your situation. I know you didn't ask for advice, and unsolicited advice is the worst. Still, I hope that perhaps helps a little.

2021-09-08 09:18:35 +0000 UTCYour diatribe hit pretty close to home this week Noah. A family friend passed away a few years back after a week in intensive care following an ATV accident. A close friend of my sister, they belonged to the same church youth group, and everyone in this group had come together to support his family (for which I am glad). He was a good man and he touched a lot of lives. Everyone had been hoping for his recovery, but the odds were stacked against him from the beginning. He had two collapsed lungs and suffered brain damage from oxygen deprivation before they were able to get him to the hospital. I was trying to be supportive as best I could of the people around me and never once spoke as to his chances, but I knew, rationally, they were not good. My mother is deeply religious. Their megachurch is the hub of her social life, and pre-pandemic she was down there three times per week on average for various functions. Earlier in our lives, there was an episode where a cousin of ours suffered severe head trauma as a child; the doctors fully expected him to die, they even had a priest give him his last rites, but he ended up making a full recovery. My mother hoped to see a repeat of that miracle; she thought that with as many people praying for this boy as there were, there was no other possible outcome. She wanted him to miraculously recover in no small part so she could present it to me as evidence that God is good and powerful, as proof of the power of prayer. When he passed away, and she didn’t get to do that, the first thing she did when I came to visit was accuse me of *wanting* him to die. As though it would prove the opposite. As though I would stick it in her face and try to tear down the faith she takes such comfort from, when I habitually go out of my way to avoid discussing religion with her. I came over to try to console her because she had just gotten the news and everyone was very upset (I had just learned it too), and that was what I walked into. I was ultimately told not to attend the funeral. Didn’t challenge it. Never told my sister any of this, not looking to stir any pots. We’ve been on very shaky grounds in our relationship, my mother and I, on account of how she reacted to my relationship with a non-Christian. Both of my parents fought me for a year to end it, said all kinds of horrible things about her and her family without even being introduced to any of them (Muslim family at the tolerant end of the spectrum, never hassled me to convert or anything, she’d developed the same doubts about the faith she was raised with as I had). After she left me, not wanting to be responsible for destroying my relationship with my family, they suggested that if I had ever truly loved her, I’d have tried to convert her, to keep her from going to hell. That I should have re-opened that wound for the purpose of proselytizing her to the religion which formed the basis of their objections to her in the first place. Seriously, fuck that. We’ve been trying to bounce back from those days. This episode certainly did not help in our efforts to repair our relationship.
