When the budgets of correctional facilities were recently cut, there arose a need to find cost-saving measures.
The prison warden devised a way to save money on punishing inmates. Since punishments required a certain amount of electricity, it was decided to shift this responsibility to other prisoners. Inmates were told they needed to perform mechanical labor to generate electricity. In exchange, prisoners could earn bonuses like extra recreation time or library access.

But the prisoners didn’t know that in reality, they weren’t generating electricity—they were conserving the electricity that would have been used to punish disobedient inmates. Now, prisoners are unwittingly using their own hands to punish fellow inmates, even their cellmates, without realizing it.
