I straight up hate funerals. Always have. We lost multiple grandparents over the course of the pandemic (still going, I know) and I had two different experiences. One was a Catholic funeral where...for all their faults the service was nice. There was a lot of ceremony I didn't understand...but very little in your face Christianity. The other was with the full on Evangelical experience. Thankfully, it wasn't quite as bad as what you got but... I'm fuckin' sending hugs anyway.

My grandma died earlier this year and I felt the exact same way about her funeral as Noah felt about her father-in-law.

I actually had to skip today's diatribe after the first couple minutes because it hit me very close and I'd like to share my experience with a very similar situation. I also have been present to see preachers shamelessly using a funeral to drum up business and it's utterly sickening. Many years ago the boyfriend I'd been dating for a few years was living with me, a few states away from his family, when his mother got suddenly very sick and has to be hospitalized. We drove down and spent about a week essentially hanging out in the waiting room of the hospital all day and going back to his brothers to sleep before doing the same the next day. During one of the only times my then-boyfriends mom was actually conscious, I had chosen to stay back and sleep in that morning, and when my boyfriend got to speak to his mom, she was so kind and actually immediately wondered where I was, because she was so used to seeing us always as a unit. My own parents were born horribly abusive to me my whole life, and my boyfriend's mom had allowed me to stay with them even though they were very poor and they split the threadbare amount of food they had to cover me as well. As far as I know they were actually both pretty uncomfortable with their son being gay but they STILL treated me as part of their family and never said anything unkind to me. There was this one night when I was doing the dishes without being asked and my boyfriend's mother walked up and gave me a hug and thanked me and she just kind of unbidden said to me, "You know, you're my son too." And wow, she showed me more love in that moment than my mom had in my whole life. So, suffice it to say this was a very good person who cared a lot about me when she didn't have to. And a week or so after we came home from the hospital, we got the call that she had passed away, and we turned around and drove back down to attend to the funeral. My boyfriend and his family were from Georgia, and the funeral happened at a really old church kind of out in the middle of nowhere, and the preacher who "eulogized" her spent about an hour screaming, and I mean literally his face was turning purple, and he was literally stomping and jumping all over the stage, to the degree that her casket actually started shaking. And I sat there with my teeth and my fists clenched as I watched this revolting preacher use the sadness of this dead woman's family as an excuse to prostelitize, raving, screaming like a crazy person, literally spitting into the air and having convulsions on stage because he was so invested in this stupid act, and stomping with such ferocity that the DEAD PERSON'S CASKET WAS SHAKING, and it wouldn't have surprised me if it had tipped over, the absolute disgusting display of this man capitalizing on death to screech about Jesus, to screech about hell, to threaten people with hell... ...it was too much for me. I got up and walked out. And I really expected a lot of push back from the family but thankfully they didn't really understand what my protest was and I didn't explain it to them. I sat in the car by myself just fuming, watching this revolting preacher use an innocent and kind woman's death to LITERALLY foam at the mouth and screech about eternal damnation, waiting for it to be over. Eventually when everyone came out of the church, my boyfriend himself was pretty quiet because he had been just as disturbed by the display while also still in shock from his mom dying, and his sister at one point came up and laughed and put her arm around me, and explained that she and the others assumed the reason I'd walked out during the "service" was because I'd never seen that kind of preaching before and I was scared. I let them believe that rather than bothering them with explaining. My point is, I absolutely understand where Noah is coming from. I didn't finish the diatribe so I don't even if he managed to sit through the whole funeral but I was absolutely traumatized by watching exactly that same thing happen to my ex boyfriends mother at her funeral, and I hope you guys won't hold it against me for skipping the diatribe. Just wanted to say I completely understand. The anger and disgust I felt that day will be with me for a very long time, and I commend Noah for getting through it, however he did.

Blue Gemini

I've found all the diatribes related to the process of a loved one's long term illness and death helpful even though I'm not experiencing anything like that at this time. If someone at PIAT could eventually compile those and release them in a collected format as a patreon bonus or something I would appreciate having it as a resource for when I inevitably need it.

So, as xtianity is the purest form of edging, Jesus wouldn’t just be the Lord, but actually the ultimate Edgelord.

Marcus

My fathers funeral was exactly the same.

Waiting for the download for Anna’s song. I need it.

Amanda Burns Art

An older woman I know shared that she could think of nothing to do for a friend who lost his father because his Dad had no faith. This rude statement stayed with me because she felt so justified she repeated the statement. It’s just so sad that In the same way that pastors repeat the same litany, so to attendees act out the same dance, but feel nothing.

LBShreve

I always try to listen to the original song first. The first ad was for a Christian alternative to Tinder called SALT. Naming your dating app after the thing Lot’s disobedient wife was supposed to have been turned into is weird.

I'm so tickled by the students at SPU handing over the pride flags. I ran track in college, and my dinky college competed against SPU (they beat us soundly, every time). Also, I'm a lesbian living in the Seattle area, so it makes me happy to see the people around me acting right.

Bowl of Piss Water

Hey, I liked it again this week.
