Scathing Atheist 536: TotK TKO Edition

In this week’s episode, the omnipotent creator of the universe loses quite a few fans, we learn from Pastors For Trump that the white power of Christ compels us, and we’ll thaw out Don Ford (voice of Fantasy and Adventure) once again.

I'm a Houghton alumnus (pronounced like hoe-tin). Not surprised my alma mater eventually made it on this show. The comments about trying to show diversity only when it matters to their bottom line was spot on. I was one of probably 3 Hispanic students when I attended the school. They plastered my face on everything they could. I felt like Turk in that episode of Scrubs where they put him in the same picture twice for a college brochure. They were backwards about a ton of stuff. You could get in big trouble for dancing and had to go to therapy if they caught you smoking a cigarette. It was a controversial move when they hired the first female president of the school as well. According to my friends who are still connected to the school and the religious community, the school has only gone downhill since I graduated. The more their enrollment drops, the more they double and triple down on anti-LGBT bigotry.

You just know that chick talking about merpeople watched Black Panther Forever the night before and convinced herself the brown people were all demon merpeople coming for her pearls and children.

I thought the best line was from Al Frankin: "I like Ted Cruz more than most people and I hate Ted Cruz."

It's great to hear Noah and Eli so enthused about TotK. I'd love to know how they put aside the main quests for games like those, because it's a big personal problem in my gaming time; I can't really seem to manage to put aside the impending end of the world to go do the fun things in nearly any RPG play.

My kid was so excited I played him your review of Zelda. Blew his mind. He says his only complaint is that wooden creations are too easy to accidentally chop.

We need, nay, we demand, Church Van Updates!! Is it still in front of your house?

Ted Cruz has a face only a mother could resist punching.

Hey Noah, if you're sick of slipping when climbing wet surfaces do the Gazette quests. Each piece of the Froggy armour you get from that increases the amount you can climb before slipping upto 4 times as much with the full set making climbing in rain almost a non-issue.

I didn't love Breath of the Wild, i just liked it fine enough. So i've been operating under the assumption that the jubilant praise for Tears of the Kingdom has been from the same unhinged egotistical gatekeeping Gamer™ fucknuggets who stopped just shy of burning crosses in the yards of anyone with a desenting opinion last time around. Hearing Noah discussing the game and the way in which he does so makes me interested in giving it a try. Hearing him discuss and praise the game in a way that isn't in the form of pseudo-cultic zeal is a welcome releif and I now fully intend to pick the game up when i have more time for it instead of ignoring it outright as I had planned. Speaking of the afforementioned fucknuggets though, that pseudo-cultic zeal worries me in a way that that ties into the scathing atheist more generally. I worry that as people become more secular, younger internet-savy people in particular, that zealous impulse that forms religion is instead being concentrated into fandoms. SA diatribes discuss with some frequency about the dangers of religious mindsets being adopted by and applied to business and politics, but not much about fandom. We can agree that this behaviour is bad in the context of gods, corporations, and autocrats; why would that same behavior in something smaller and more innocuous not also be bad? Just figured i'd share my thoughts on the offchance Noah reads this. Might be an idea for a diatribe in here [and an excuse to talk about TotK again ;p]. Also, fucking stellar song Ana and Don did a bang-up job as always. Great episode!

Love hearing Noah & Eli nerding about TotK! We need a podcast about you guys talking about video games!

"Long stick" is the most over powered fusion lmao. You can bypass everything with 15 logs glued together into a ling stick 🤣
