Phone Calls.

Natti woke up and was just laying there thinking about Dmitri and how much fun the beach was yesterday, and also how much fun it almost wasn’t. She thought about how good it felt having his arm around her and of what it felt like when he touched her. She loved the way that he handed things to her, he seems so gentle around her, and she loved the way that he kissed her.

She reached out and picked up her phone and opened her contacts and swiped up on his icon. There was their song, “Fifteen Forever” and then his voice calmed her heart, “Hello lovely, I was just thinking about you”, he told her. Natti leaned back into her pillow and said, “Hey that’s my line, I just woke up and I’m laying here in bed and thinking about you.” “Oh and what exactly were you thinking about me”, he slyly questioned. “I was just thinking about the way that you hand things to me, the way that you took my arm as we crossed the street, the way that you were looking at me when I looked at you, and how much I love it when you take me in your arms and kiss me.

I love it when your head moves my hair when you kiss my neck, and the way that your lips feel as you nibble on my neck behind my ear”, she sweetly replied. Natti could hear him chuckle quietly and he told her, “I love kissing your neck behind your ear, you smell so good.” Natti responded to his pillow talk telling him, “Oh I wish you were here now in my bed kissing me behind my ear.”

Then skipping along Natti asked, “So what do you have planned for today?” Well, I’m going with mom to help her distribute food at the food bank. They are always getting large boxes in and they need someone that can help move stuff, and besides, I like helping people. Natti’s mind went into overdrive thinking of what a real man he was. There was no pretense, no show, he was going to do whatever he wanted and if you didn’t like that then too bad. Then he asked if she had heard any more from Megan? Natti told him that she hadn’t and was planning on calling her right after she got up, but I wanted to call Tara first.

He told her that they were so fortunate yesterday when that attorney Mr. Billings and his wife was there. They really took charge, but it also showed him just how much danger there was in the world. He told her that he was genuinely worried about her interactions with people. “Did you hear the foul names those people were calling all of us? I mean what business is it of theirs? If you don’t like something then you don’t like it, and it’s not everyone's business to do just what you are approving.”

Natti once again loved how what many people would say is just a kid, could be so knowledgeable and mature. “I’m going to that support group tonight. Mom said that she would take me and then we could stop and eat after it was over. I think she is going into the store today, but she said that she didn’t want to be there all day after working most of the last 3 days”, Natti added. Dmitri asked if she thought Tara would go with her as well? “When I talked to Hayden on Friday she said I should bring family and friends with me.

Those that support me and those that may have some reservations so that they can find out the truth, you know kind of like the truth from the horse’s mouth, I forgot where I heard that.” Dmitri said he thought that was a great idea, but now he had to go. He had to help his mother load up their SUV with some food and clothes that they were bringing. Natti ended the call, “Okay I’ll call you tonight unless it is after 10 then I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Miss me!” Dmitri always responded.

After talking to Dmitri she lay there in bed for a few minutes when her mom knocked on the door and Natti told her to it was okay for her to enter. Her mom sat on the side of her bed and asked how she felt and she responded that she had never felt better. Her mom looked over at the computer speakers that had the good morning birds and rustling sounds of the forest filling the room and remarked that she may have to try sleeping with those sounds if it really worked that good.

She turned back to Natti and said that she had to go into the stores and check on where she was in her inventory. She also told her that they really had a good day yesterday. Not only did they sell a lot of furniture but a lot of accessories. Her mother began to list off what they had sold and she included, “We sold that antique quilt that I picked up at that estate sale, that handmade red cedar table and chairs from 1851, that Korean white lacquered bedroom suite, and that free-standing Lady Stewart mirror. So what say I take you out to eat this evening after your support group?”

Natti congratulated her on the sales yesterday, and added that going out to eat after the meeting sounds like fun and asked, “Tara was going to the support group as well do you think it would be okay if I offered for her to ride with us and to come with us to eat afterward.” Her mom said that would be fine. Natti, then asked her if she had spoken with Hayden, and her mother told her that she called her yesterday afternoon and she had learned so much about the support group.

She continued, “Did you know that on average there are over 200 people that attend that group every week?” Natti replied that tonight there will be 203 because Tara will be there, and she was pretty sure that many of her friends would be there as well.

Her mother changed the subject asking if she was hungry, to which she replied that she was. “Well climb off your 20 mattresses and 20 eider-down quilts and get dressed and come into the kitchen and I’ll have something special for my little princess.” Natti smiled and responded that she would try but she didn’t know if she could because she had a really sleepless night because there was something hard in her bed.

Her mother laughed and stood up and pulled down her bed coverings saying, “Well princess hurry... and then stopped looking at her asking, That’s a really cute nightgown, where did you get it?” Natti told her it was in those clothes that she had got from her friend, Sylvia. Well, I’ll have to tell her that you’re getting some use out of her clothes. Now hurry, I have something special for you that I know you’ll like.

Natti got out of bed and took a quick rinse off, brushed her hair, applied just some light makeup, and put on a pair of red jeans with a white blouse with white sandals joining her mother in the kitchen. As she walked in she heard the blender and asked what was on the menu. Her mother said that she picked up a bunch of fruit, some oatmeal bread and made cinnamon toast, and had just blended cream cheese with pineapple juice. “Oh, and there is some tea if you want to grab some.” Natti poured herself some sweet tea. She sat down in front of the big plate of fruit and sipped some of the tea.

Her mother brought over the cream cheese and set that and the cinnamon toast down that was cut into slices. Natti speared a strawberry with her fork, dipped it into the cream cheese, and took a bite. “Hey this is really good, what else did you put into the mixture”, she asked?

Oh, just some non-fat dry milk, a good source of whey protein, you really like the taste, her mother asked? Oh yeah, this is good. Natti had to sample a little bit of everything with the dip on it and then satiated for a few minutes and asked her mother, “Mom why don’t you ever do any volunteer work?” Her mother replied that she did. Just yesterday she donated a whole truckload of furniture that she couldn’t use that she had bought in a “Lot” to the “Helping Hands” thrift store. They give me a receipt, then at the end of the year when she paid taxes she would take the difference of the charitable deduction and donate that. She also added that she would take the cost of the delivery and donate that as well. It all works out, in the end, and is good for the community.

Natti was pleased that her mother did things that she thought were helping other people. They chatted for a few more minutes, she told her about the beach, about the guy juggling stuff on the beach walk, and about the scene at Billy Bongos. Her mother without seeming concerned that her group needed to be very observant of her surroundings in the future. “The best way to avoid trouble is to avoid trouble areas.” I don’t want to limit your activities, but I want you to be safe, and you can help by being careful.

What did you say the name of the attorney that helped you out was? Natti told her his name was Billings from West Palm Beach. Her mother then asked if it was Hugo Billings? She replied, “Oh yeah that was it, I still have his card.” Then she asked if she knew him and she replied that she did and said that he was her lawyer at one time. She said that she would have to send him a thank you note, saying she was really impressed with him. Natti then asked, “What did you need a lawyer for?” Her mother replied that when she obtained the divorce she had to have a lawyer. Natti acknowledged that with an, “Oh, yeah. Well, I’m going to go and call Tara.” She picked up her plate and rinsed it off and put it in the dishwasher, then asked what time she would be home. Her mom told her that she should be back about two askings if she might want to do a little shopping? Natti hugged her and said that would be nice and then left for her room. Her mother watched her go and knew that she would have to be told soon because she didn’t want her to find out from someone else.

Natti brushed her teeth and then picked up her phone and swiped Tara’s icon. Tara answered and said that she wasn’t even out of bed yet. Natti admonished her for being lazy and she said that she was tired and was just catching up. The two girls talked about yesterday’s happenings and Natti asked if she had talked to Megan yet. Tara told her that she hadn’t and both of them wondered how she fared after leaving the group.

Natti then asked Tara about something that Dmitri said yesterday. You know he noticed that when we joined everyone in the parking lot that we were only there for a few minutes before going to the beach. He then said that some of the people were there for almost two hours waiting for everyone to get there so we could all go to the beach together?

Tara said yeah she knew that and she and Cole were there for almost 20 minutes before they got there. Her friend continued that I think he was observing that the group wasn’t all there until I arrived. Did you notice that? Tara thought for a moment and then agreed with her, even though she hadn’t noticed that before. Then she offered that maybe it was because both she and she had come to school on that Monday dressed alike.

Natti’s mom stuck her head in her daughter's room and announced that she was leaving now, and Natti waved to her. Natti returned to the conversation with Tara and agreed that was probably the reason, and then she asked if Tara was going to join her at the support group that night? Like yeah girl, I’m totally tainted! Natti asked if she wanted to ride over with her and her mom, and added that we’ll probably grab something to gab afterward so you can join us, I’ve already asked.

I know that every one that is dressing will be at the meeting tonight, and if they bring their friends there will be quite a few new people. Natti said that she was going to call her right after they hung up and then Tara said, “Well bye and go ahead and call her. I’m going to go get out of bed and take a shower, I’m feeling kind of edgy since talking about yesterday. Later bestie!” Natti said goodbye to her friend and then clicked off Tara’s icon.

She sat there for a moment thinking about her friend and about how much more she is learning about her friend each new day. Tara didn’t give anyone at school an inclination about what she was really like. It was all an act that she put on at school, and probably everywhere else that she went. She also knew that she didn’t paint this subterfuge with her. What she was experiencing was the real Tara, and she knew that meant that Tara considered her a true friend. She knew that she could tell her anything and that she didn’t have to be ashamed of what her friend would think. Natti realized now just how much a true friendship was worth.

She went into the kitchen to grab carbonated water and came back and punched up Megan’s number. Megan greeted her exuberant, “Hi, what’s up? Natti asked her about what happened yesterday after you left with that attorney and his wife?

“Natti you wouldn’t believe what they did. We got back in town and they had been asking me questions the whole way back. I told them about the double dressing, all about the fight that you and Tara almost had with Dennis, and then about the beach and they were so nice. They asked me how I felt when I told my parents that the dress is just going to be the last week of school.

Then they inquired about their response when I told them that I had changed my mind and I wanted to dress all the time. Both of my parents weren’t happy about that and on Saturday I just stayed in my room until everyone kind of cleared out. I told them about me going over to Sarah’s and hanging at her house and spending the night there on Saturday and Sunday, and then coming to the beach today.

Then they asked me if I could do them a favor, and I told them I would if I could after they helped us out. Do you know what the favor was? They just wanted to take me out to eat. I wasn’t all that hungry and I was kind of not wanting them to get involved any more than they already were, but they told me that I would be doing them a favor. So we went for hamburgers and while we were eating they wanted to know all about my dressing.

Well, I never told anyone, not even you guys, but I had been dressing for a long time. My big sister gave me some clothes and she let me keep them in a bag in her closet. I told them that I finally came out of the closet. Then I told them about the support group today and Vie, that’s what Vivian wanted me to call her, asked if she could take me to the group tonight. I thought it was a little too much and I told them that I didn’t want to put them out and Vie was literally begging me and so I finally agreed to that, she was about in tears. Well, we sat there talking and she said that she would really like to get better acquainted with me and asked if she could come today and pick me up and spend the afternoon with me.

I told her that it wasn’t necessary and she was like begging me. I looked at her husband and she told me that Hug, that’s what she calls her husband, was going to New York tomorrow and that she would just be setting at her house watching TV and that she would love to get out. I mean they were like begging me and stuff, she was almost in tears. It was so surreal. I agreed when Mr. Billings took my hand and said please. I don’t know what to make of them. They are so nice.

Well my parents had finally calmed down a little when I got home and they told me that if I was going to start dressing as a girl it was okay with them, but they weren’t going to be buying my clothes unless they bought clothes for a male. I think that they want to do that so that I will stop dressing, but that won’t stop me. I may not have a lot of clothes but I’ll buy what I can at thrift shops and the such. Here Megan finally took a breath and Natti offered, “Hey this lady that works with my mom gave me a bunch of clothes and I’m pretty sure that some would fit you and you can come over when you can and get some if you really need to get some. I can’t have a friend of mine wearing the same clothes two days in a row.

Megan began again adding that Vivian had called right before her and told her that she was leaving and that she would be there in about an hour. Hey, have you done your stories for today? I just finished mine and I got $50.00 for the two. One I got $10. for each chapter and the other one, I got $20.00, so I should at least be able to get some stuff. Sarah said that she would help me with my makeup. I had never used makeup before and I’m just not sure about how to go about buying it or even the application. You have Tara to help you, Steph has Remy, and Sarah has Shyla so I’m the only one without a girl to help me.

I don’t care now that I have finally made the decision. I’m not going to worry about what anyone says anymore. So what do you think? Natti told her not to worry about that so much, then she asked Megan what she was going to do about her hair. She had the shortest hair in the group and it was just covering her ears.

Megan said that while the Billings’ were talking to her yesterday that Vie had mentioned her hair and I told them that it grew pretty fast so it wouldn’t be too long before I could get a decent style. “You know what she said? She told me not to worry about my hair, that there were lots of short styles that would look very nice on me, so what do you think? Natti assured her that there were some nice styles that would look good, and since it was summer it might be good that it was short. Natti told her that she was just worried about her and that she wanted to make sure that everything was okay. Megan told her not to worry and that she would be all right. They both said goodbye and told each other that they would see them at the group tonight.

After that Natti opened up her stories for the day and she did them in a little over an hour. She had already done the ones that Megan had described so she just got $20.00 for each. She went into the kitchen and made herself some celery with peanut butter and then Hayden called. She was just checking to make sure that she was coming to the group tonight and to see if there were any issues. She told her that she would be there and added about her other friends that were planning to attend. She told Natti that she knew about Cyndi and Heather and that the others probably had different group members to contact them.

She told her that after a couple of meetings that if she wanted to you could volunteer to help new girls come into the group. “We all help each other and that makes it so much better for everyone”, she told her. Well, they talked about who was going to talk tonight and she told them about the therapists that were going to speak. There is a group that they work with and they are all really great professionals and that she would see them tonight. Then she added that it was kind of like a meet and greet session when they had their refreshment break. It was also a good time to get to know one another. They said goodbye and Natti went back to her crunchy celery.

She had just finished when her mom came home and she came in and she said that she didn’t want any celery when Natti offered to make her some. Natti informed her of Tara's revelation about the surprise package. “Mom, Tara bought something online and she bought it for me, but she is having it sent here instead of at her house.” Her mom said that made sense since it was for her. Natti told her that it would have Tara’s name on it so don’t be surprised when she saw the package.

She had her mom sit down and told her that she didn’t want there to be any secrets that could affect their life together. “Mom I feel that I’m actually starting my life anew and I don’t want to hurt you or hide from you. I want you to know that I will always strive to make you proud of me and to do what is correct. I’m old enough to know right from wrong, and if I need any help I will ask you so that you can help me be the best person that I can be.”

Alicia was very moved by her daughter's admission, and she told her that she had something to say and that she didn’t think it would make a difference, but that she wanted Natti to know.

Natti when your father and I were married he was in his third year of college. I had just finished an associate's degree in communications.
