We all met at one of the outside tables, never the same one as the last break and we started setting up the chessboards. I was surprised when Jennifer pulled one out of her bag. I asked where did you get that Jennifer said Mum got it for me last night.
Well, she paid for it anyway she never asks me what I'm buying anymore. She just pays the bills and I don't abuse it.
So with three boards set up, 6 of us played.
Ben said. he'd watched as he was thinking about what to do about Julie, Jay, and Jennifer said she needs to suffer for what she did, Sam and Tom said she needed to atone for what she did but didn't think she needed to suffer. Sandra didn't know what to do, and Alex said he hadn't been around long enough to make a judgment.
Ben, we need to do something to make her understand the consequences of her actions, Julie walked up to the table then and told the group that she needed to be punished for what she did and to Jay. Julie said I'm truly sorry for the pain, both physical and emotional, that I've caused you then to the group, she said. I'll take any punishment. I need to suffer for what I did.
Ben said I've got an idea.
Julie, you need to know what it's like to be petticoated, to have a parent who is supposed to protect you, but instead chemically Castrates you or tries to castrate you by giving you testosterone blockers and female hormones.
And forcing you to be something you're not, and because you're being forced to be something you're not, you have to put up with people treating you like you're a freak by snickering and giggling behind your back or doing it openly or saying things to your face. All your parent does is tell you to be a lady and not respond to any of it.
Julie said a parent wouldn't do any of that, would they?
Ben looked at Sam and Tom thoughtfully. Sam and Tom looked back at Ben for a moment, then Sam and Tom looked at each other, and they said ok we'll talk about what our mums did they told the group about the healthy drinks their mothers made them drink, and then the vitamin pills and the laser hair removal treatments and then Tom gave her an empty pill box with her name on it and told Julie.
I know what they do, as I looked it up already, but I want you to go online when you get home and find out what the pills do.
I also want you to look up the laws regarding giving someone the drugs that were in that box I think you'll find out that it's against the law to give it to a 10-year-old. Julie had a shocked look on her face but said I'll do whatever you want me to do.
Ben said from now on. You will hang out with us at every break, you will not talk unless you're spoken to first, and you will defend and protect everyone here no matter what it costs you. Is that clear?
Julie said yes, it's perfectly clear Ben said good because Jennifer's email buddy is heading this way. Ben looked straight at Julie and asked what are you going to do?
Julie didn't flinch and said to protect the group at all costs. Ben told Julie to sit down and then went into teaching mode. Chess is a game that can help you with life in that you need to have a plan.
In chess, you're planning to checkmate the king of the opposing player, and you must have variations of your plan for when your opponent blocks your move.
It's the same in life. You study one thing that lets you learn something else so you can become a doctor, lawyer, or whatever you want to do.
And by helping each other, you're teaching each other new things. Miss Bright said that is very true Ben, I didn't know you wanted to be a teacher. Ben looked at Miss Bright and said the law is my first choice, but you have to have options, if something doesn't work out.
Miss Bright said very true. Then she looked at Julie and said are you ok? I heard you were upset. Julie said I was feeling sooky and teary as it's that time, Miss.
Miss Bright said we all get like that sometimes. If you need to go and see the nurse do so. There is no shame in seeking help Julie said I will, Miss. Miss Bright said to keep up the good work, girls, and walked away. Julie said shit. I need to go to the girls now. Jennifer said I'll come with you.
Sandra looked at Sam and Tom and asked is that true what you said.
They both said yes.
For our 18th birthday, we will become real girls as the hospitals won't look the other way unless we are 18 or very close to it. Sandra looked upset and asked does that mean your thing doesn't work anymore. Sam said. it hasn't worked in over a year and a half.
Sandra said. that's terrible. Has this happened to all of you Ben said. yes, our mothers have given us pills to change us. Ben didn't fully trust Sandra yet, so he was only giving her just enough information.
And that's how it went for the rest of the week. We played chess and studied together. Sometimes it was all of us, but sometimes Ben or Jay wanted to be by themselves, and Sandra would go off and come back at the next break or the next day with some information like she found out that the Brent twins had run away and their father was off looking for them.
When he finds them they will be going to a military boarding school.
Julie happily stayed with us she hit it off mostly with Sandra but she would do anything Jay asked for even when he didn't ask for it Jay one time asked why was she doing that Julie answered I did a very mean thing and I'm trying to make up for it. Jay seems to accept that.
On Friday, at the first break, everyone in the lunch room was shocked to hear Julie going off at three girls for teasing Merry Brent for wearing nappies.
She called them crewel heartless bitchs who deserved to wear the same clothes to understand her feelings. Julie then took Merry in her arms and hugged her.
Right then, Miss Bright walked up and said I've had reports from 3 different teachers about you 3 making snide comments and hurtful remarks to Merry. I've already spoken to your parents, who have left your punishment to me as they're sick of your attitude. Now get to my office, Miss Bright then turned to Merry and found her being comforted by Julie and Sandra.
Miss Bright Said good, you two look after Merry, take her to the washroom, and help her to compose herself then, left to deal with the three troublemakers.
Our group quickly left the lunch room for outside so we could talk openly. Julie came out a little later and said. I left her with her brothers, and they were glad I helped her, but those three better stay in public areas if they know what's good for them.
Alex asked are they that bad Ben said yes, they can be.
They have money, and they have been known to pay someone to beat up their target if they can't get their hands on them or if they want an alibi, so yes, they can be that bad right then Jeremey came up to the table and thanked Julie for looking after his sister Julie asked how's she doing?
Jeremey said she's tuff, and she knows to keep her nose clean if she wants out of that outfit. That's why those girls thought they could have a go, as we all have been keeping our heads down. Ben asked, Has your dad found your brother and sister?
Jeremey smirked and said. I see Sandra keeps you all informed. Jeremey said yes, he's keeping them at home till the start of next term. They will repeat all of this year at boarding school then they will go on to Sandhurst military college.
Sandra came up behind him and didn't make a sound, but Jeremey turned and said that is not for public notice, Sandra. Jeremey then asked what's the head bitch doing to those girls?
Sandra said. she's showing them her cane right now, but they will be dressed the same as your sister when they leave her office, and they will have to wear it for two weeks.
Jeremey said well. Then I'll just have to give them a public face slap. Alex commented, but won't that extend your punishment Jeremey smiled. Our families are from Scotland, and we all wear kilts when we stay up there, so this isn't that bad for us. The only one it's hurting is our sister, which is upsetting us. We are a very close family, and we look after each other our parents have always told us family comes first always.
He looked at Sandra and put a finger to his lips, and she nodded. Then he said the only reason why my brother and sister ran away as they were scared of our father and mother. They are scary when their ma.d Then he said. if any of you need anything, just ask Ben said. thanks, but it's Julie and Sandra who deserve that Jeremey shook his head. My family owes this family, and he gestured to all of us.
We all had questioning looks, and Jeremey said I see a family here. You will protect each other no matter what I see that in your actions and gestures to us.
He laughed. You guys don't even know what I'm talking about, do you? He said I love to people-watch, and when I watch you guys, I see concern for the others in the group when there not with you.
It's like yesterday when Jay wanted time to himself.
You all, at separate times, checked on him. You didn't leave the table, but you all checked on him the same with Ben and even with Sandra, and they reciprocated as they constantly checked on you every 10 minutes more or less. We all looked sheepish at each other as we knew it was true.
Jeremey said. you might not be a blood family, but you are family, and my father told me that sometimes those families are stronger than a family by blood.
Jennifer asked how good are you with computers he smiled. I'm pretty good why?
Jennifer said. this isn't for the group as we'd have to talk about it, but this would be me owing you a favor. Can you please look for my brother?
Jeremey said. I don't have to. I email him every Friday and tell him what I know about you. He's glad you've finally got friends and that you and Ben are talking. We were shocked to silence.
I'm only telling you now because I've finally seen that you're old enough and definitely strong enough to stand up to your mother and that head bitch. I don't know where he is, and he doesn't want you to contact him directly as he knows your mother has spy wear on your phone and laptop, and the bitch has the same on the school network. She knows everything we do about it. That's why he's never tried to contact you or Ben. He didn't want them to do anything to you because of him Ben nodded. I know they gave me a hard time after he left, but I didn't know anything, so they left me alone after a while Jeremey said. I better go now as I see deputy principal Dick over there doing his rounds. Then he told Jennifer, " If you write a letter, don't use anything electronic. Just use pen and paper. I'll email it to him, but we'll need somewhere else to hand it over, as there are too many eyes here Ben thinking quickly, said Jeremey do you know the shop on the corner of Guy Street and Arrow Street? The owner is Stacy. I'll meet you there on Saturday midday, and we'll talk to Stacy as she lets me get mail there so my mother doesn’t know.
Jeremey said, ok I’ll meet you there. Then headed to where his brother and sister were sitting Alex looked at everyone and asked Jennifer if she was alright. She nodded her head and said I knew John was watching me. Now I know he is watching me.
Sam said I think we should tell him about the caddy as he may say something to his brother or sister, and she’ll find out about John.
We all agreed except Sandra and Julie, as they asked in unison.
What about the caddy?
So as they got told about the caddies I went and talked to the Brents at their table. When I got there, Jeremey said. Hay Alex and he introduced me to Merry and Paul. Then asked me what can we help you with?
I told him my family had sent me to give you some information, and I told them about the caddy and how we found out about them and advised them, unless they want the head bitch to know, never talk in the lunchroom Paul got mad that bitch I’m going to smash every single one. Jeremey told him to shut up and to use his head, and not to let his temper get the better of him.
We can use this to our advantage. That seemed to settle Paul down.
I looked at Merry and said I think that’s why Miss Bright was there so quickly, but Julie got there first, and Sandra backed her up Merry said I’m glad they came to help me. Can you thank them from me?
I headed back to the others and saw that deputy principal Dick was talking to my friends. As I walked up and sat down He looked at me and said are you in this chess club too? Alex, I said. Yes, sir, I am. It’s great fun, and through it, I’ve made some great friends that have also helped me catch up with my schoolwork.
That’s great. I was telling the other club members that I was in the chess club in high school and also in College, and you’re right. It’s a great way to make friends and talk about class and other stuff. After he left, I said Did that feel strange to anyone else.
They all nodded. Julie said he gives me the creeps sometimes It’s hard to describe most of the time. He’s a good teacher. Well, that’s how I feel most of the time. Then now and then, I get a creepy feeling about him, and I don’t want to be around him.
Ben said it was funny. I used to feel that way about him, but not now. He just comes across as a helpful guy. The bell went off, and we headed to class. By lunchtime, we were all waiting to see how happy the three girls would be in their new uniforms. They looked so happy standing in the corner. The best thing was no one dared say anything wrong to them.
Except for Jeremey of course who walked right up to them and grabbed them by the throat and pinned them to the wall so their feet couldn't touch the floor the third one he just knocked to the floor and he told them if they ever do anything to his family or someone they care about this will be the nicest thing to ever happen to you then he banged their heads against the wall then he dropped them on the third girl and walked away.
We didn’t stop. We just walked through to an outside table and just had a chilled time playing chess and talking to each other, then headed back to class on the last break of the day. We started talking about the weekend then Sandra got there and told us Jeremey copped a caning from Bright but when he left her office the leader of the 3 girls was there and said if Jeremey touched her again she'd report him so he slapped her and knocked her on her ass then he picked her up and slapped her again Miss Bright picked her up this time and asked her why was she here then Bright told one of the office staff to take her to the school nurse.
Miss Bright then said maybe a week in nappies will make you behave. Jeremey then hands her a letter Bright reads it and you can tell she's not happy then she says alright then next term you're in a dress now get to class.
We wondered what was in the letter but knew Sandra would find out if anyone could. For the rest of the break, we just chilled and talked. I gave everyone my address and got everyone which resulted in everyone swopping addresses. I discovered we all lived close to each other Sam and Tom live on the north end of Tudor Park, looking over it in the up-market end. Sandra lives a block south of me, in between Ben and me. Julie lives a block south of Jennifer on her side of the park. Jay lives on the south end of the park, just a block from Stacy’s shop Jennifer told me she’d come over in the morning as we returned to class.
When we got to the front gate, Mum asked Jennifer if she wanted a lift home which Jennifer excepted, of course, as she wanted to keep Mum happy.
We talked about school all the way to Jennifer’s place then we said see you tomorrow. We headed home where I did my homework and Mum gave me my big glass of milk as she made dinner.
