Solar light designed for off-grid communities.

I don't mind giving what appears to be a genuinely charitable organisation a bump every so often, so here's a video about a solar light designed for areas of the world with lots of sun, but no electrical network.

You can buy these from the organisation's online shop based in the UK.  I've checked shipping costs to other parts of the world and it was less than it would cost me to send the same size of item!  When "wealthy westerners" like us buy a light it funds distribution of these lights to the places that can really use them.  As a bonus, we also get quite a useful and well designed little light at a realistic cost.

I got mine last week and they are excellent so far. Charging them from a blue sky with 10-20% cloud cover and no direct sun, I face north, and left the units charging for around seven and a half hours before I remembered them. I then left them running and they lasted between 9 and 10 hours. I repeated the test a few times, including the same charging period each time so as to see if the results would be the same with regards to run time. Which they were allowing for the fact that I wasn't timing them to the exact second or minute I've since then charged them for shorter and longer periods and seven to seven and a half hours seems the optimum charging time in my particular location with no access to direct sun. It will be interesting to see how the charging time will vary as the seasons pass. The green charging LED can be useful if in a place where you can't access direct sunlight, e.g. where I live, as the LED's brightness depends on the amount of power hitting the solar cell. Thus one can adjust its angle to the light source to maximise the amount of light striking the cell. Useful when you have to make the most of any light you have access to. All in all, for £10 they are well worth it and so I'm going to get a couple for myself now that the grand kids have received theirs. So thanks Clive, an excellent suggestion.

I wasn't aware that there were political adverts being run. It may be targeted to specific viewers.

Hey Clive, how do you feel about the smear adverts from the Tories appearing before your videos and the revenues being passed on to you?

Well I have donate all my funds for the month to YouTubeRed subscription and my two peps I choose to throw a buck in there bucket on this site. But I shared it with the people that are most likely to help in this case!

Neat, ordered a few for the grandkids as they do the rounds of the festivals and these should be great for that. Plus it will save them 'borrowing' any of my battery packs and torches :). As you suspected Clive, the slits in the side are for adding a strap as the site shows them with a strap for use as a head torch.

The print preview comes out garbled with lots of stuff off-page and on top of other stuff.

Don't know if it will work but CTRL+P might force a printout.

Ordering one now Mr Clive. Not a wealthy westerner, just a westerner who wants to help in some way. I would prefer to use PayPal or Google Pay rather than my credit card (oh shit that makes me a wealthy westerner). Bought 2 in the end.

What i don't understand is why they include these "i am charging" LEDs into products that you can not see that LED glowing anyway while it is in the sun ... i know it is only a few milliamps, but still ... just save the money for the LED and the resistor and charge up a little faster ...

Normal charge voltage of a LiFePO4 is ~3.6v

I like that design, very neat! Possibly a great addition to summerhouse!
