To be fair, it works and apart from potentially putting a lot of current through the transistor base/emitter it's reasonable as a current limited charger for NiMh cells.
I like the case on this unit, it has potential to be used as a battery pack with very easy access to the batteries.

I wonder if they do a 3xAAA version. Many LED torches use 3xAAA torches, usually with an adapter that can be used in place of a lithium ion battery. However, it's been a while since I seen anything use 3 AA batteries. I used to try avoiding such gadgets years ago as my older battery chargers only recharged batteries in pairs, which meant waiting for 2 sets of 3 AAs to run down so I could recharge 4 AAs, followed by 2 AAs.

Never dark, just approximately 1/3 dimmer as you change out a cell! For fun, each circuit could have it's own switch, as well as a master switch for the whole array...you know...for maximum switchy goodness. Approved by the department of redundancy department! Yeah I ordered one. (Just found the bag of hand wound transformers I made one rainy day!!) I'm doing it.
