Test of a PSU like the one that went on fire.

A while ago I showed some images that AvE had been sent of a power supply that had gone on fire while unattended.
Obviously I had to get a similar looking one to check out, as they are a very common supply on eBay.
If you have one of these supplies then it's fine, there's no need to worry about it bursting into flames. I was pleasantly surprised at how cool the switchmode was running. But as with everything like this, it should not be left running unattended for long periods of time.

It was plugged in to the charger and I noticed it was one of those dirt cheap little cube shaped ones that Clive would certainly have showed to have poor high/low volt separation and a chance of full mains getting to the phone. I had one like it and my iPhone refused to recognize it and allow it to charge. More learning from Clive's earlier charger works!

2017-07-12 05:33:13 +0000 UTCI am surprised that this unit is switch-mode. All of these cheap power supplies I have opened had a huge multi tap transformer about the size of a MOT and the voltage and current regulation was all linear.
