DIY ornamental rotator.

The best thing about this project is the use of a common ungeared motor with a simple system for storing rotational force and releasing it slowly to the suspended ornament.

I've got an old clock mechanism like that. Every minute the motor would the display drums round one minute and also wound up a simple flat coiled spring with an escapement mechanism.

Roughly 25 years ago, my grandmother had a wall clock that operated in a similar way. Periodically the clock made a whirring sound for a few seconds, which also caused minor zig-zag interference on the TV (analogue days). At the time I didn't really understand why the clock did this until one day it stopped and my brother changed the battery. When he removed the battery, it started ticking and continued for a few minutes. Indeed the brief batteryless operation explains how it worked - It would have had a mechanism similar to a wind-up clock, but with a motor that periodically spun to keep it wound up. Despite using a brushed motor based on the TV interference, I don't recall it regularly running down the battery either. However, I think it took the larger 'C' cell.
