Pre load-in prep of in-house PARcan stock.

Not sure if this video will be generally released.

It's a sneak peak behind the scenes as we start to prepare for the load-in of a show. (Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.) These are the in-house stock of traditional PARcans that are used to augment the more sophisticated intelligent lighting.

bummer these can't be reffitted with consumer grade hardware and marketed as artsy lights...or how about a big solar garden lamp full of fairly lightts?

I work in broadcasting (well, training students for careers in production), and love the vids! Might have to link some for the students in my lessons!

The Griffiths Family

I like these walk arounds.

It's mainly automated fixtures now so they combine a huge array of lighting effects in a single unit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yMHV_6SB7c

Possibly a review of several lighting tools? While there are more advanced platforms, my favorite in school was the Fresnel due to all the lens and filter possibilities. I am sure there are many who have never known how all the lighting works in a production.

Hooray for more behind-the-scenes, this-is-what-an-electrician's-life-is-like-outside-of-all-the-glamour-moments, for-fucks-sakes-clive-its-friday-why-did-you-bring-the-camera-to-work-and-who-ate-all-the-biscuits-again videos. Especially for us electronics weenies whose contact with high-energy systems is minimised. I mean, yeah, you usually want to minimise your contact with high-energy systems unless your some crazy scot who keeps wiring himself to the mains on camera for youtube, but you know what I mean...

Instead of a lab tour you could do a warehouse tour when it’s full as I expect it’s fairly empty now for the Military Tattoo in August.

I'll join in the general request for more behind the scenes videos for events like this, please, Clive. I've dabbled on the fringes of theatrical lighting in the form of conference organisation and the associated AV, and I would love to learn more.

The side of me that nearly went into the lighting tech industry lives vicariously though your behind the scenes videos :-) really enjoy them!

The Edinburgh Tattoo has its own dedicated substation plus a backup generator.

Big Clive

Me too.

I'd also like to chip in and make known my interest for more behind the scenes videos. It impresses me every time how much power those PA systems draw. I wonder if bigger venues have their own transformer station to get the required short circuit power ...

Does the castle have enough power or do you bring in trucks? Would love to see more of the behind the scenes stuff.

I used to refit school stages and it wasn't uncommon to find Pat 23's and 123's that were in factory condition because the lamp had clearly failed early on and nobody could be bothered changing it.

Big Clive

About 10 I think.

I think it was custom built for the stands. It's out Livingston direction in an industrial estate.

Ahhh... Takes me back. When I started out Strand Pattern 23s were the norm, together with Frankendimmer rheostat controllers. I thought all my birthdays had come when we got some Tempus dimmer packs. I've still got a couple of these lying about somewhere. Looking forward to more vids on rigging this monster show.

Malcolm J Bannister

Brings me back to my younger theater days. No intelligent lighting at college - just a lot of Strand gear and triac-based dimmers. Love all aspects of your work ... though you don't have to go so far as tasting anything like Methylated spirits again. Leave that to Ralf. :-)

Matt Hessinger

Hi Clive :) You've done the Tattoo for a few years now eh?

The number of lights is impressive, but where the hell is that warehouse if you're in Edinburgh?! Looks massive, something I've found most Edinburgh warehouses are definitely not :D
