Are these stungun modules?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDJp2tHmEQo

I finally got around to testing one of these common eBay "400kV" spark modules, and I wanted to ascertain if they are based on stun gun power supplies. The logical way to test that was to touch the output and see how much it hurt.

It did hurt.... Lots.

I've included a search link for the modules in the YouTube video description.

Are these stungun modules?

Comments

I avoid HV after getting 50KV thrugh a table in to my leg while working as a test engineer for LG. Ive never been the saa saa saa saame since.

These modules are only intended for brief use and put out a DC pulse. That means they're not really suitable for making ozone.

Big Clive

They're not really intended for continuous use. For a short neon tube you can use the CCFL drivers for PC case modding.

Big Clive

It's easier to make a high voltage diode out of a number of lower voltage ones in series.

Big Clive

I got some stuff locally while here. But my bags do tend to spend a lot of time going back and forth in the X-ray machine.

Big Clive

Would one of these work as the high voltage source for an Ozone genrator (like your http://www.bigclive.com/oz.htm one)?

Rob Smith

I picked a couple of these up after watching Julian Illet scare himself with one, I tried the one I had with a 5V from a USB power-bank and the noise was horrendous and I nearly crapped myself, never touched them since.

SO after watching (Thanks for taking the hits, Clive. Hope you had a good shot for each one you took!) I wonder if these could be used to drive a neon lamp? I imagine it would have to be modified somewhat or you'd always get that flickering film noir hotel or diner sign effect...though that might be cool too.

Michael Thompson

I had to pause the video after the disclaimer to preemptively like this video. I love this channel. Happy to be a supporter thereof! ...base of the spine you say? Hmm.

Michael Thompson

and did they?

Richard Boyce

Picked a couple up to try and make an electric igniter system for a gas BBQ I have. Figure with arcs like that and battery powered, should do the job nicely.

The Griffiths Family

Damnit! repeatedly clicking on the little heart icon doesn't increase the count.

Scott Miller

Hi Clive, Why is there a stack of diodes and not just one?

Wow, that's shocking :). O saw Julian Ilett trying one of these and he scared himself to death, shows how hard Scots are !

Phil Collins

How do you keep this up? Aren't you on location? You carried a whole bag of china-items with you from home to Edinburgh? I would love to see airport security when it goes through customs :D

Wonder if they can be used to upgrade the Dealz flyswatter? Mine doesn't seem to do anything other than annoy them :D

John Carr

Not a bad idea! Although the current delivered might not be enough to get through, say, an A4 sized piece of wood. Might have to do it in smaller stages. And not kill yourself in doing so!!

Loscha

So could these be used as a cheaper alternative for making lichtenberg figures?

It's worse. I did it more than once.

Big Clive

Are you sure? They're really cheap. And technically speaking they're power supplies and not actual stun guns.

Big Clive

Big Clive - taking the pain so YOU DON'T HAVE TO.

I am in the middle of school but I want to watch this so bad, plus I finally made a 555 timer LED blinker

Pretty sure stun guns are illegal here in Australia, too. I definitely won't be buying one of those modules, cause I'm pretty unco, and I know I'd do myself a proper injury.

Loscha

Big C takes another hit, For Science!!

Those modules are very you, Clive. :-)
