Things you should know about fuses.

Choosing a fuse isn't complicated, but there may be a bit more to it than you expected.  This video also gives a look inside a blown industrial (power distribution) 160A fuse and a 15kV "expulsion" fuse for overhead lines.

Things you should know about fuses.

I wonder if there are any lucky pound land employees who have to watch your videos on the clock.

Our house has an older consumer unit with bottle fuses, mainly 16A's for the sockets and 6A's for the lights. One annoying thing we experienced over the years is that any time something with a 13A plug fuse shorted out (e.g. kettle element short) it would blow the 16A bottle fuse while leaving the 13A fuse in the plug intact.

Nice 1 Clive.

I know what you mean about FF Fuses. In a certain manufacturer's dimmer racks, the FF fuses didn't blow fast enough under a fault condition (usually a blown lamp) and generally took out the triac and sometimes the driver chip and associated circuitry. The cure was using a higher rated triac i.e. replace a BTA 08-400 with a BTA 16-800.

I think the heatshrink may be to add extra insulation from adjacent components and to help contain the debris and arc if it goes.

Another awesome video!

Past me, it's very much euro dance.

Now I'm gonna have to figure out what the song reference is...

Like the drugs reference :). Interesting stuff, it was you that first warned me about dodgy Chinese fuses, but lots more information here and thanks :)

In some devices I have seen fuses (normal glass ones) wrapped in heatshrink. Assuming the fuse is correctly rated for the application, is there any advantage or disadvantage in doing that? I guess it will protect the surroundings in case the fuse suffers an explosive rupture, but will it make it worse in case an arc is started inside or something similar?

Clive, is it possible for you to do a walk through of your shop.
