Inside a water globe air cleaner.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6yuQ8NZvMk

Not very high tech this time.  This is a nice simple device that claims to clean the air in a room by passing it through a stream of fine droplets of water.  The way it works is quite neat.  Just a spinning disk with fins on it to move the air and a slightly tapered shaft that draws water up to the disk by virtue of the spinning throwing the water against the tapered sides like a reverse cyclone.  The water then gets spun off the disk as fine droplets while the fins merge it with the air that is flowing through the unit.

Some LEDs enhance the units appearance greatly by illuminating the naturally swirling water.

About 12 hours later the bowl weighs 120g less, so 10g (10ml) of water gets blown out an hour. (Which was then promptly removed from the air again by the dehumidifer next to it.)

I refilled the bowl this morning to exactly 1000g and have left it running all day, so I'll weigh it again later and see if the amount of water has changed much.

the shaded pole motor deserves its own video! electric motors are fascinating....

So I guess the proof of it working will be seen if the water level drops and the remaining water turns a manky grey colour. I wonder how effective it is against airborne pollen and spores?

That's possible. I'd guess that the thin slots are to discourage kids from poking things into live circuitry. I might try it with the outer case off completely.

I wonder if you can increase the air flow by drilling out the air inlet to match the outlet?
