Inside a digital 80kW power saver.

Yeah, it's another quack item with grossly inflated figures. Nice meter and case though.

I'm loving how scarred-up the Big Clive bench has gotten since I started watching a couple of years ago. Also having a good chuckle at some of the more... shall we say, "experimental" reviews and teardowns. :) Keep 'em coming mate, cheers from Sydney.

I scavenge as you describe, but usually keep too much.

What do you do with the junky stuff after the teardown? Clip the decent parts off for the project bin, recycle the rest, etc?

That test was a pretty severe current waveform with a large array of LED lamps on a dimmer. But a utility meter is supposed to provide an accurate measure given that money is involved, so they should have provided a more accurate result.

The nail hasn't caused any discomfort at all. Not even really when I whacked it. It'll gradually fade away over time.

Big Clive

Wow, that magnifier made the left thumbnail look so much more painful!

What I'd be interested to see with one of those things made into is a beefy home brew battery bank since you could get the meter swapped with an amp meter. Judging by the case size probably get a pair of 4.2ah batteries in it even with the meter... I might just have to try it out...

Might make a decent case/meter for a small psu or something. Not much other value there!

I came across an article about some Smart Meters measuring up to 6x the actual power consumption with certain combinations of dimmers and LED bulbs. This makes me wonder if this device could make things even worse. https://www.utwente.nl/en/news/!/2017/3/313543/electronic-energy-meters-false-readings-almost-six-times-higher-than-actual-energy-consumption

Sorry, It was late. I was actually thinking I'd forgotten something when I made the post.

Big Clive

Damn it you forgot the YouTube link :D Now I had to go here and click on it manually :P

This is what's annoying me here in Oz is that we can buy these unsafe and unusable parts, I wish something can be done about it anyway another great vid Clive in showing us about them

"If your name's Bill you're screwed", lol

I think it was suffering from indecision.

Big Clive

If you look closely, the Hopi meter actually flashes 0.6A a couple of times. Odd

Yes, but you can also buy the panel mounting meter modules on eBay on their own.

Big Clive

Fun! (ish) Decent case, decent meter.

Michael Thompson

Is the meter salvageable?

Dustin

Well, im a dead man walking then. ;)

Bill Browning

The "if your name is bill, your screwed" comment was hilarious.
