Say hello to the UK's Carnival Clubs.

This video was inspired by Ben Golden who is a member of a British carnival club.   He asked if he could send me a lamp they were considering using as replacements for the existing tungsten lamps which are being phased out by eco-regulations.  You'd think that swapping to LED would make wiring simpler and allow the use of a smaller generator due to the lower load, but it's actually quite a complicated subject due to the odd nature of LED drive circuitry that introduces power factor issues and an unpredictable failure mode.

Traditional tungsten lamps have a very predictable load, a very broad spectrum light output with a very rich infra red component meaning you can literally feel the light.  They're also very moisture resilient due to their self-drying feature (heat!).  LEDs can be a bit "empty" feeling in the same application.

Maybe you mentioned this in the video and i missed it, but is there a reason they cant use DC ?, say 24V for example. there is a huge variety available for that voltage. is it an issue with voltage drop and to much current?

In the disco era there was a trend to use 240V 15W pygmy lamps in large animated arrays. They used to blow triacs left right and centre when they popped.

The best one (and more common on 230V AFAIK), is when a tungsten lamp with a small envelope trips the breaker AND explodes the glass envelope :)

Why not just use halogen bulbs? ?

Industrial power factor correction can be done in two ways. By matching a suitable capacitor to each load like a motor, or with an automatic switching system that compensates for the whole factory on demand by sensing the power factor and switching in combinations of capacitors to compensate. It's getting more complicated over time though, as so many loads are electronic and present quite a complex current waveform.

Hey Clive, could you do a video explaining the entire power factor and industrial generators situation? Would this actually be a situation where those balognes Chinese power saving modules might come in handy?

blakethepatton

It also thrusts.

The Clive Word of the Day to Misconstrue is "gyrates". Again, the word is "gyrates".
