Total teardown of a flexible LED filament lamp.

This was a very destructive video that took a surprisingly long time to make.  I had a thoroughly enjoyable time reverse engineering this lamps relatively simple driver with an odd twist that is probably intended to make it dimmer-compatible by providing a continuous low current load for the whole mains cycle.  The LED filament construction is also completely new with the ability to accommodate series/parallel arrays of chips.  That means it's actually viable to make a 12V version of this lamp.  At the moment the first ones only seem to be available for 220v to 240v use.

Have you thought about a wrist strap for connecting to earth on the quick test? Could be invigorating.

I picked one up surplus from a lab supply company in Florida. It seemed to have never been used, as it had no cord and the colors are UK. I only got it because I saw Clive's - I don't think they are common in the US - but it's been terrific. My favorite use so far was to temporarily use my circuits while wiring up my remodeled family room.

They're very useful things. An absolute must for the mains voltage workshop.

I picked up one of the QuickTest boxes with US colors. I put it on the bench, unsure of when I'd actually need it. Turned out to be about two hours later when I wanted to do a quick hook-up of a laser power supply.

The second regulator and resistors are probably there to improve the power factor. It will allow current to be drawn before the LEDs switch on.
