Air freshener interbreeding with "incident".

Ever had a product that doesn't quite do what you want it to do?  I decided to make a custom air freshener unit that is somewhat more subtle than the ones that just pump aroma into the air all the time.  i did this by transplanting the electronics from one unit into another.  And everything was going so well until....

Many of these companies are connected, but it could also be a common manufacturer of the mechanisms.

I just finished my own. I went with an Air Wick "big can". But strangely, besides being completely black, has exactly the same internal design. They aren't the same company though? Probably some interesting story behind that.

CasualKitty

I got the bigger unit in a local supermarket.

Big Clive

Brilliant! Where do you get your air fresheners from (The one in the video that ended up being frankenmodded)? I found the refills in the pound shops!

Marmite

I love the hardware modding type videos!

The Frankenstein Fresehenr

Phil Collins

Don't tell IBM...

Scott Miller

I think you may have won this one.

Big Clive

Clive, was the "faulty" board worth more than $5,000? If not, I may have you beat ... :P

Scott Miller

Watching your videos is a great way to start the day. Thank you BigClive.

Ah yes, been there done that... I recently fried an Arduino Nano in a similar fashion out of sheer idiocy. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who occasionally suffers a brain fart. ;)

The bear that like to stimulate the senses. You'd have to invent BigClive if he weren't there already.

"The moral of the story is: cover your arse" reminded me of a guy who somehow thought it appropriate to include the following phrase in an email to my boss (at the time), while applying for a job: "We're not super anal, but we engage in a game of arse-covering at all times" He didn't get the job, but it did give us a bit of a laugh.

If doing that I'd use a PIC microcontroller with the light sensor on an ADC and a transistor to drive the motor.

Big Clive

I think it was the blob chip.

Big Clive

I didn't feel too bad because the supplier of the reconditioned card had supplied many faulty out the box previously.

Big Clive

You are a cad and a bounder sir, with your posh Edinburgh accent, today you went over the top. You made my good lady laugh twice. First at "who fucked up" and second at "I put it back in the box and said it was faulty".

Demolished Man

I'm not to the point where you rip open the circuit board donor but this is a very simple logic to control and in that space you could easily do it with an arduino nano as long as you have at least 5v in there. It would also be a good excuse to explain microcontroller programming basics to your audiences.

been there done that LOL, nice one Clive

What component let the smoke out on the blown board?

Lostngone

That's why I leave the incidents in. Everyone makes mistakes and it's actually quite funny setting them happen.

Big Clive

I am so pleased you put it back in the box, and said the circuit board was faulty!

I agree with Savvas.. great to see you're fallible :).

Haha, I think the expletives made this video even better. It's good to know that even the pros make mistakes and let the magic smoke out, makes me feel a lot better about the fact that I fuck up at some point in 99.9% of the projects I work on :)
