They must be sealed well, no sign of insects moving in. The Homebase ones we have always seems to have some weird webby stuff around them. Not as bad as the halogen ones we used to have which were colonised bay ants.

Is it possible that this unit fell on its side allowing water accumulate into slime on the lens and into the switch or other electronics that happened to be face down in the mud/water, etc

Hey Clive you should try a fibreglass pen for taking off the oxide layer, it won't take off the small tracks like a screwdriver can
