500V test of British General USB socket.

This is one of those videos that happens unexpectedly and provides good entertainment value when made with a side serving of sparkling white wine.

500V test of British General USB socket.

I'm sure the electrolytics will last long enough for USB-A to go out of vogue and require that the entire unit be replaced with a higher rated USB-C socket ;-)

Why you dont tested with L/N/PE together against the USB port? Thats the point where it shouldnt be faulty? :)

I've always tested L-N, L-E and N-E for a full set of insulation tests.

Big Clive

It's usually blue and should be marked with a Y rating like Y1. They do often have wider leg spacing than normal capacitors.

Big Clive

isolation tests are usually done with all L and N connected together and tested against earth/ground, not between L/N. great vids

Hi Clive, How do you recognize a class y capacitor? Is it the extra wide legs, or is it marked?

Nah, he tested the nekkid module later in the video, same result.

Might your isolation readings be impacted by the power input pigtail you have attached?

Thomas Nagy .. *dreamy sigh*

Tom's channel is excellent - I believe it's "Nah-zhee" tho (Hungarian?) - he tells people his channel name in some videos and it sounds posh ;0 I found him via this video - it's an early one he did and it shows what is quite simply the worst electrical work I've ever seen - whoever did that should be found and shot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcWIKZtCPwA I agree on domestic electrics being avoidable tho - my Dad was an Overhead Linesman (25Kv) and wouldn't do domestic work because he said it was "fiddly, annoying and largely a blame-game". He'd barely change a plug - which is how I got to learn to do it and here I am working mostly on 12v ;0

May I please have a moment to bitch about something nobody cares about until it starts leaking/drying out? The Electrolytic Capacitor. The assembly on this board completely violates the proper mounting procedure by subjecting the seal around the pins to transverse strain, as well as mounting one of them UPSIDE DOWN when installed in the socket! Not something that I would have expected from a proper British device meeting electrical safety standards.

Seven comments in and not a single Hungarian complaining about how you pronounced Nagy? :-)

Is he the London based electrician chap?

I saw the Thomas Nagy video and was wondering about this. He didn't test his install on video, so we don't know if he got the same result.

Nocturnal life. Very common in the technical community.

And everybody knows the fun happens after 3 am!

It's the best way to make a video. Candy, cookies or a drink whether it be coffee or a chilled alcoholic beverage.

Big Clive

I've always wondered why you pair you videos with a drink or even a snack.
