I just wanted to add my condolences and sympathy for you, Clive. It can't be easy to deal with, I'm sure. These things always seem to come as a surprise, no matter how much you may know it's on its way. My own mother passed at far too young an age when I was still in my 20s three years ago now and it took me at least a year to mostly come to terms with it. It still hurts now. So don't feel that you have to keep up with your usual rate of videos (unless that's a welcome distraction, of course); look after yourself first :)

The water beads don't really move well as they absorb the surrounding liquid and end up slightly heavier than it. They also swell up so much they virtually disappear.

Sorry to hear about your Mum passing. My condolences to both you and Ralfy. When my grandmother was alive about 20 years ago, she had the unfortunate experience of her TV bursting into flames, which was an early 1980s model with a wooden casing. She said it made a bang sound and in the few seconds she took to unplug it, there was already a large blaze out the back. Luckily my uncle was there and smashed the window near the TV to extinguish it with a hose. The fire brigade took 20 minutes due to the rural location. It took a few weeks of cleaning and painting every room to clean up all the smoke damage.

I wonder what it would take to get COB LEDs with small coils attached to float like this? Maybe even with a small cap attached. Put a charging coil at the base so when they come down they get recharged and then float back up glowing. A cap might contain a bit of air to help with buoyancy too. Or maybe combine it with the Cartesian diver effect. Hmmm...

I have not tried them in a lava lamp, I bought mine in a "smelly device" room fragrance from the cheap shops mine were purple but after leaving them in a few changes of water they lost their colour. Trick for the kids I have a small bottle that looks full of water but when you pour it via a hole there is only a very small amount of water, the beads are swollen in suspension and a transparent. I think your mystery plastic is polystyrene, I think it can be made that clear, I remember the small parts drawers used to be made of that. (Now they all seem ro be cloudy polyethylene that you can’t see through.)
