Checking out a large COB array.

The LED COB modules are really common on eBay now, so I thought I'd get a few to check out.  This one is actually pretty nice.  I'm not sure how long it will last in continuous use, but if run at a sensible current it should be OK.

The row that lights last at low voltage could just be one bad diode, as they are all in a series + parallel arrangement. The 'cool white' ones are easier to see through - it's 4 banks in parallel, rather than 28 series sets.

Using an iron for pre-heating pcbs is a good idea. I use a 250W glass-topped hot-plate when reworking SMD - came from Good Will for £2 (less than $3) and works pretty well

We've always had Kit Kats, but only a small range. There are a few more these days though. Peanut, chunky and plain chocolate versions.

I'm in the US and I have never heard of Oreo Thins till you mentioned them before. I wonder if Oreos in the UK are are doing what KitKats in Japan did.

I am seriously considering buying four of these for my garage. 12V power supply, 2W 4.7 ohm resistor for each to limit current/forward voltage. Hm. or maybe one of those cheap bare-board adjustable power supplies set at 20V? Run them 2s2p? That would be 10V across each.

It's so specialised that I doubt it would be available to the layman. It's a phosphor loaded gel where the phosphor ratio, density and thickness are all a factor in the final colour.

Looks as though it'd be bit overkill in most vehicles - maybe as lights inside the roof of a truck body or something. But amsuing to see you chop the thing in half.

Does anyone know what that yellow gel is they use on COBs? Can it be purchased?

I was thinking about replacing a halogen bulb in a torchere floor lamp with one of these. They need a bit of heat sinking.

Shades of the French Revolution there :)

Phil Collins

Yeah!

That was fun! The chopping was unexpectedly cool. Always something great on this channel. Thanks Clive!

Michael Thompson

Yeah chop it up :)
