670-Volt LED lamp!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC0YPNJo6mA

This is a new twist.  A long series string of LED filaments being run at high voltage and low current.  I've never seen an LED driver quite like this before.  It's based on the common lower power LED filament lamp with a linear current regulator, but doubles the incoming supply voltage to allow the same circuit to drive more filaments for higher power.

My mate who's worked on MV has told me about the gauntlets and goggles they had to wear, and all the tools encased in heatshrink and about three layers of tape to prevent accidentally shorting the bussbars. Which makes your father's trick even more breathtaking... a phase-to-phase short on the end of a set of unfused jumper cables connected to the incoming site supply would have caused things to get very exciting very quickly... Like, "a couple of million watts" exciting! That was just how they used to roll in the seventies I guess. :)

Really cool teardown and diagnosis.

I kept thinking sticky tape it to the bench :-) We had 5 substations 11KV at the factory I used to watch the lads working on the LIVE 415V using some special large rubber translucent gloves they were very thick around the fingers about all you could do was use spanners a screwdriver would be difficult. I can just see Clive "just a moment" and back into shot with Pink Marigold gloves (not safe, it is the thought that counts) I used to get a bit nervous when my Father would get out the 2 inch masonary nails and a set of car jump leads and make a temporary 240V supply from an industrial 3phase aluminium cable on a building site so he could run the portable oil cooled welder and tools, the tricky bit was getting the nails back out and making it safe afterwards this was back in the late 1970s. The hairs standing up on the back of my neck were not due to electrical fields just FEAR. John

I avoid mains voltage whenever possible. That said, I've also got wonky eyes and no depth perception. So I pick my battles.

Clive lives for the danger! πŸ™‚

Watching you trying to get the probe onto a tiny pad running at 650v had me internally screaming "unplug the fixture, solder in 4cms of wire and use a test clip, Man, what are you doing?"

12 year life span my arse! With a flaw like that I would image a life span of 3-5 years. Nice looking bulb but shame it's being sold with such a flaw. Great video Clive thanks again.

Really enjoy and learn from the post mortem videos. Nice one a Clive.

i got an ad on youtbe video for this about "Power by linear" thats amusing
