Autopsy on a faulty night light.

I like doing autopsies on things that have failed.  It's always interesting to see what failed, what caused the failure, how it can be fixed and improved.

While this video was uploading I replaced the capacitor with a 100nF one and a new 1 Megohm discharge resistor.  I chopped the resistor feeding the sensor and also removed the individual indicator LED.  It now puts out a useful amount of light continuously with such a low power consumption that the Hopi meter didn't even register it.

Good video. I do like these type videos.

I get "outdoor", "cats" and "pink" 🙂

If you go to youtube and type bigclivedotcom the two top search suggestions (presumable based on popularity) are "bigclivedotcom doll" and "bigclivedotcom flame" ;-)

According to the family of Clarence Zener, it's pronounced zee-ner.

The zener voltage has to be higher then the series string of 8 LEDs or they wouldn't light. The best way to control the zener temperature could be to half the value of the dropper capacitor to around 300nF.

Do you think replacing the 15V zener with a 7.5V would have helped? I imagine the 78L05 might still operate off that low an input voltage (provided the ripple isn't too great). You would think the power dissipation would be halved. Maybe that, coupled with a smaller dropper capacitor could bring the unit back to full operation..

Pronunciation - Zener/Zener - which is correct? I suppose you can use either (or is it either?)

When I made the spoof 100W LED video the hardest thing was trying to say all the names wrong.

Big Clive

On the theme of saying it wrongly, when I was young I used to say capaci-tater. It would be mighty comedic if you did a video where every component name was painfully mispronounced.
