Dodgy UV tubes on eBay.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r50lgEnGAsw

I'll probably re-record this video in a shorter version. I'm spending most of my time at my mum's home while my brother is away and it means I don't have much time to make videos at my normal work bench.

This one was rushed and needs to be made shorter with some more technical data and clarification.

Dodgy UV tubes on eBay.

Comments

Many of the boxes and tubes have no information.

Great informative stuff Clive. Thanks. I guess “read the wave length data” on the box carefully before using UV tubes applies!

My Brothers when they were young used to run a Discotheque with various lighting effects. Amongst those was a UV bulb, BC fitting and looked black. The great effect was that it showed up the girls underwear to their embarrassment and boys delight. In those days all underwear was white. They enjoyed themselves.

No need to rerecord - a little creative editing would fix it up nicely. BTW, thought you might like this write up: https://ha.cking.ch/s8_data_line_locator/

One of the reasons I wanted to re-record the video was due to the lack of further comment on the outdoor workers and skin cancer comment. The full version was that people who work outdoors develop a skin defence to UV over time, but people who do not normally get exposed to sunshine due to indoor jobs do pose a much higher risk of aggressive cancer when they expose themselves to high levels either by sunbathing or use of high power tanning beds.

Good video! While I don't especially like regulation of the things people can buy, I do wish things like this were always sold with appropriate warnings.

I agree with everyone - no need to edit it. Really informative video and perfect the way it is.

I'm afraid you're incorrect Clive. Ozone, O3, has a much higher absorption and a much wider and varied spectrum absorption than breathable oxygen, O2. I also have to take issue with your statement that sun exposure does not cause skin cancer. During the 1970s, the phenomenon of "sunbathing" grew in popularity, that same generation saw a 200% increase in melanoma. While I have to admit that this might not be a causation, there has been obvious correlations made. I could not find the original research papers I read on this subject, however, "More Skin, More Sun, More Tan, More Melanoma", published in the November 2014 issue of the peer reviewed journal "American Journal of Public Health", provided a historic meta analysis of cancer rates and sun exposure. I know of other articles which have run lab based experiments on natural sunlight vs "tanning beds", which do not show a significant difference in cancerous growth rates between the two, but do show a significant increase as compared to limited exposure. Unfortunately, I can not find them to sight them at the moment, so can only offer them as anecdotal.

Many of the UV LEDs are actually near-UV as you say. Just a deep violet.

Awesome stuff as always, Clive! Yes that is a heartbreaking story as well. I agree: No editing required.

Thank you Clive you have edified me once again.. A lot of us country dwellers with a private water supply use UV-C water sterilisers.. The tubes are made of quartz glass and we replace the lamps annually.

This video most definitely does NOT need editing to be made shorter. It was genuinely fascinating and I learned a great deal. I’m currently trying to build a UV side-lit clear plastic notice board that will fluores certain colours of liquid chalk pens (dry wipe). I opted for a flexible length of UV LEDs but, I’m not convinced they are UV and more like a very low wavelength blue. However, they don’t seem particularly bright so maybe there is a lot of invisible UV. I guess I’ll only know for sure if the project works correctly.

So long story short coloured UV tubes good, Clear UV tube bad. Thanks for a great video Clive
