Early DIY slot machine.

I've been digging through some old stuff and came across this early attempt at building a coin operated slot machine with payout using CMOS logic chips.

what an awesome build! Definitely deserves a place in your "games: room!

That is so cool! I'm surprised you don't have it up with your pinball machines. What a wonderful thing! -and the execution speaks for itself after so long. Awesome.

Oddly, it's being stored in a fairly dry environment in the region of 50% humidity. I wonder if the slight rusting internally is from another time. One bit that had degraded was the tapes adhesive. It had dried out.

There's a lot to be said for learning logic basics. Even with a microcontroller you're still working with logic building blocks. It can help make the programming leaner and faster.

When I took a Digital Logic course at a major university in 2008, they STILL had us design complicated things (well, multi-item multi-coin vending machine complicated) with pure logic gates, and building slightly simpler devices with logic ICs. I still don't think they've updated to offering microcontroller programming courses to undergrads.

A bit of rust means moisture. Moisture is the enemy of cardboard and tape even more than metal. HOW that has managed to stay together in a climate such as yours, Clive, is simply miraculous.
