PROPER rechargeable LED work light.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lIzQFA-JCg

Unlike the multitude of crappy work lights on eBay, this one is a decent unit with a beefy battery and consistent regulated light output.  It was given to me by the local electrical utility company because it wasn't taking a charge, but it appears to be the charger at fault.

So let's open it and take a look inside.

The 8 pin chips are a buck regulator for charging the battery and a boost regulator for driving the LEDs.

I think the two 8-pin chips are simply transistors, and the unmarked chip is the brains.

Big Clive, If a simple stack in parallel was used would it be simpler to use protected cells and let them look after themselves?

Even just a bigger parallel stack of cells with the existing protection PCB would make the cheapo one more useful.

I am currently doing a project based on Clive’s earlier piece about leds with drivers on board. Using them to replace quartz bulbs (fragile and very hot) in very nice work lights with stands. Ensuring good heat sinking is the main engineering issue but doable.

Really interesting to see a POSH one with solid specs against a cheapo. Given what George Cohn said about price of posh one I suspect an upgrade project doing 2s2p plus balancing/protection board and even chip upgrade would not save a lot.

I did stuff as much battery as I could into one.

I let it run low until it cut out (but wan't here when it did). I put a small amount of charge back in and let it run out again and there was no obvious warning. I'll test it again.

Ya gets what ya pays for :)

I'd love to see a video where you hack the chinesium version with a proper LED and charge/protect circuits. Moar power Less Money!

PeetieGonzalez

Did it give a warning before it cut out?

I think that one is $83 USD on Amazon but the specs are really good.

4:35 "...why would they do that?" Because they suck?
